The members of Renata had all attended Enfield High School in Enfield, Connecticut.
They had recorded and self-published two albums before Jeff Blue spotted them in 2004 playing a show at the Whisky a Go Go, in Los Angeles, California. Blue, a vice-president of A&R from Warner Brothers, had a reputation for signing major acts such as Macy Gray and Linkin Park. A meeting between him and the band initiated a two year period of song writing, traveling back and forth between Connecticut and Blue's Hollywood office. In late 2006 the band was signed to Virgin Records and subsequently changed name to The Last Goodnight.
