The New Mutants review

Boring, rushed, senseless, dumb. The last X-men movie without Marvel Studios being in charge, and a clear reason why that is a good thing.

An average movie

Since this movie had been notoriously famous for being endlessly postponed, I didn’t have some huge expectations but I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, to be honest, I don’t think it was really so bad after all. I mean, some ideas were really neat and it seemed that that they did start with a decent concept but, unfortunately, somehow, it felt as if they never managed to finish writing the script. Indeed, this mix of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ with the X-Men definitely had some potential and this team of young super-hero’s was pretty cool, especially Illyana Rasputin who had the most intriguing super-powers I had seen in a very long time (her fight at the end against this giant demonic bear was also pretty epic). Unfortunately, the holes in this story were just so huge. I mean, I did like the fact that they didn’t go into too much details to explain the background of these young mutants, that worked fine. However, they should have elaborated more about the place they were staying. Seriously, what was the freaking deal? Who was in charge? What was the end game here? How did they end up there? How long the other patients had been there already? Did they make any progress in the mean time? And also, how come there was only one person managing everything? Try to imagine Jack Nicholson going to the asylum and ending up with only Nurse Ratched taking care of all the patients. It would be pretty weird, right? As a result, Alice Braga ended up with a completely half-baked character whose motivations were never clearly stated and how come she wasn’t affected by Danielle’s ability? Anyway, to conclude, in spite its flaws, I have to admit that the damned thing was still watchable but I might be generous because I watched it with some very low expectations.
