An average movie

Posted : 3 years, 11 months ago on 10 June 2020 10:27

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kirsten Dunst, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it might seem at first to be really original, in fact, I thought it was some kind of mix of ‘Gattaca’, ‘Brazil, ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ and even ‘Romeo and Juliet’. On top of that, even if the concept did have some potential, especially for some amazing drawing done by Escher, for a video-clip or for a short movie, I’m not sure if it was appropriate for a full length feature like this one. I mean, each time the action was slowing down (which happened rather often), I would ask myself the same questions: ‘Is it actually physically possible?’ and ‘what the hell am I actually looking at right now?’. However, the biggest issue was probably with the story though. The problem was not really that this impossible love story was terribly generic, the problem was above all that it was rather poorly developed. For example, they shouldn’t have used the amnesia gimmick if it would then simply come and go whenever it was needed for the plot. Furthermore, I think it would have been better if they took a darker approach, if, for example, their romance would have been physically impossible. Instead, they went for some cheesy happy ending which solved pretty much everything, not only for this couple but also for everyone else living in this world. Anyway, to conclude, I know, it might sound as if I really didn’t like the damned thing at all, but at least, it was really creative and it did result in some amazing scenes visually speaking so, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look.

Brilliant Concept, Naive Story!

Well, I was awestruck at the special effects, at the science behind the gravity that has been metamorphosed here. Even though, it is impossible even to think about two planets not colliding with some magnificent support of gravity, I truly enjoyed the concept.

Now, the story is kinda weak but it appeals and aptly complements the concept of Upside nwoD.

Jim is extraordinarily charming, Kirsten is okay but sweet and Timothy's character is very adorable. All the performances were stupendous and special appreciation for Juan's experimental venture. Being his third film, he has surely grown into an ace. CGI, SFX - well, the my clap goes to them, too!

As a whole, I loved the movie which is not a bit draggy and will keep you entertained. Though, some sequences made me think and fail, I would recommend it.

BOTTOM LINE: Watch it if you are a Sc-Fi fan and loves experiment.

WATCH OUT FOR: Timothy Spall, Jim Sturgess & the brilliant concept & execution.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Extremely inventive concept executed very well, but the story suffered from a lack of connection to the lovebirds. As someone else said, this is like no movie you've ever seen. Extra half star for the visuals and coloring.

I really liked the animated opening and had high expectations for this unique idea... but alas this is a hokey, lame attempt at a sic-fi romance. Sure the visuals are cool but once the gimmick wears off you're left with an unimaginative script with actors phoning it in, and a director and editor who do not deserve such an opportunity.

Upside Down

As far as love stories, they don't get any weirder than this. How can an imagination think of 2 worlds , one on top of the other just slightly separated and people upside down to each other on both worlds. Then have 2 people meet and fall in love against all odds and throw in Kirsten Dunst with that cute, eccentric smile and you have a winning formula.
Well worth watching if you like love stories in a completely different context.
