Personal War Drama

Posted : 1 year, 3 months ago on 19 January 2023 02:25

It’s the patriotic Angelina Jolie!

“If you can take it you can make it…. A moment of pain, is worth a lifetime of glory!”

The guy’s a high school runner, and then a soldier, obviously, but as an intellectual I relate to that philosophy, because thinking about ornery smart people and the books they write can be quite pain-inducing, in a way, but it’s worth it for me. Even as a mystic, I think it has a relevance. We don’t want this…. Sorta, negative nothing, where you’re like the man who sat by the pool of water for 38 years saying, “I’m nothing; just let me rot”, you know. (They didn’t happen to mention that guy in the homily excerpt, but it was a nice homily.) And I don’t know; I just started to actually like the Man of the Forties in this movie, you know. And I like liking things.

I guess in general I could say that this is a personal war drama—a personal crisis drama about a war, you know. Kinda like a horror movie, a personal fight, only military instead of supernatural. It’s not a social/political or ‘adventure’ kinda story, really. It’s about the personal struggle of a soldier or warrior. I know there are novels or whatever like that, although I don’t know that I’ve read them. I have read one or two military memoirs of enlisted guys, and it’s certainly not like a strategy book. It’s about his own life, you know. It’s about him.

…. I guess I got the sense of what the movie was like in that first sitting or two, much less than half of the movie, 20-50 minutes, but the whole thing was done very well. It’s a nice movie.

A good movie

Before this movie was released, there was a really good buzz about the damned thing and many expected it to be a front-runner for the Best Picture Academy award and, as a result, launching for good the directing career of Angelina Jolie. Eventually, when it came out, it didn't turn out to be such a huge critical success after all and it vanished rather quickly. Well, after watching it myself, it is pretty easy to understand why. I mean, Jolie went for a project which seemed to be some pure gold. Indeed, she was working with acclaimed DOP Roger Deakins, the screenplay was written by the Coen brothers and, above all, it was simply an amazing story. Unfortunately, even though this true tale was quite incredible, it turned out to be a decent watch but it certainly didn't result in a great movie, I'm afraid. The main issue, I guess, was that even though Jolie made sure she didn't mess it up, she also never managed to go beyond simply telling the life story of Louis Zamperini. Indeed, there was really not much depth and, in this case, since we all knew how it will end, there was a desperate need to tell more than just the facts. As a result, the acting was just like the directing, adequate but nothing really amazing either. To conclude, since it was such a great story, it still liked the damned thing and I think it is worth a look but if Angelina Jolie can't do better than this with such a tale, I'm afraid she should rather stick to acting.

The heroism of Zamperini becomes so obvious and solemn, that seems a 'selfhelp' literatura hit. It has some masoquist moments, too, that approaches Angelina to Mel Gibson, jaja

Can't think of a better title for this film, because that's exactly what it is, the story of an unbroken man, despite what he's been through as a POW in Japan. Nothing else stood out in the entire film. It's just another film about war. But worth watching.

So this is Angelina Jolie's second film that I'm aware of. At first when I saw the teaser I assumed it was just a documentary, but when we got the full trailer I knew this was something I had to see immediately. Also that it was definitely not a documentary. Jack O'Connell is an amazing actor and this is definitely his best performance yet. I have never heard of Miyavi, but he was actually really awesome and vicious. There are several scenes that were really emotional and powerful. It had more to it than the previews lead you to believe. It's crazy how much people physically prepared for their roles. I thought the ending was pretty interesting and I liked all the facts that they put at the end. It was nice to see a World War II story that didn't deal with the Nazi part. It was truly inspirational and had me thinking about life in general. I highly recommend checking this out as soon as possible.
