Created by British filmmaker Dimitri Ellerington and his production company Six Foot 6 Films, The Road to Success captures the simplest of stories, but still manages to put a unique twist on it. At its heart, this film tells the story of a man struggling to make breakfast...
The comforting voice of the narrator tells us that "itโs the story of us" as the camera cuts between the man, played by Don Hany, making breakfast, and talking on the phone with his mother. At first the film just seems comical as Hany cannot seem to get his bread to toast. But as the film progresses the subtitles of the story start to come together. Hany just wants to be taken seriously. While at first the self-help narration in the background just seems comical, when he starts to justify himself to his mother a more sentimental note is touched.
Ellerington quickly speeds up the emotion of the film as Hanyโs second toaster catches fire and the brilliance of the sound editing really comes forth. As the smoke detector goes off, the music drops back in the mix and the annoying beeps thrust themselves out at us. Not only can we see his frustration but we can hear it. The soundtrack plays a key role at the climax and continues to provide a buttress throughout the film. After watching the first few minutes of the film, Hanyโs decrees of being a Ferrari seem to just cover up his own ineptness; however, at the end of the film, Ellerington reminds us that life really is not that bad when the nurse serves Hany his soft-boiled egg and toast.
