Nymphomaniac: Vol. II review

My relationship with Nymphomaniac: Part II is very 'love hatred'. It was very disturbing, but at least I have some good memories with it!

A good movie

Seriously, I’m still pissed off about this. Indeed, I was glad that I managed to find a UK double DVD with the director's cut for a decent prize but, for some reasons, they didn’t provide any subtitles and, as a result, I have to admit that I couldn’t completely follow the dialogues. Anyway, the whole thing was pretty hardcore, that’s for sure, in fact, Lars von Trier managed to make it even more hardcore than the first volume, something I didn’t think was really possible. Indeed, this time, he decided to add SM in the mix which was somehow  in fact rather unexpected. I have to say that I was slightly worried because for a good chunk of the movie, the main character apparently lost her sexual feeling which seemed rather pointless since we were dealing here with a nymphomaniac. But, eventually, so many crazy things happened during this dark 3 hours long roller-coaster and, to be honest, it was sometimes pretty random but it was always rather mesmerizing to watch. Eventually, the masterstroke was, just as with the previous installment, the long conversation between Joe and Seligman and how their relationship eventually ended in this movie was just spot-on and really priceless . To conclude, even though the whole thing was really dark and gloomy, I thought it was an interesting watch but you should be fully aware of its content before checking it out.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. II review

Wow that is definitely an unexpected way to start a film. If you know nothing about the film or Lars Von Trier it would definitely catch you off guard. I like that she comments how ridiculous the mathematics is. I can see why they use the black screen to emphasize sounds, but I think it would be better fitted in a book not a movie. I feel as if Jamie Bell is a much different, more intense kind of Christian Grey (Fifty Shades of Grey). I say that not having actually seen that movie, but knowing that the character K has no romanticizing qualities. This entry is way more brutal, intense, and disturbed than the first part. I'm glad that it was Shia LaBeouf who played the eldest version of Jerome. The characters started off quite likeable, but then they all become so despicable. I think honestly the only good people in these films are Joe's Father and Younger Jerome. There are some scenes that are quite uncomfortable and disturbing to watch. It isn't easy to suggest films like this to others unless they are aware of the content and it interests them.

Pros:
-It's basically porn, but has an actual plot
-The acting is quite good
-The philosophical aspect is quite interesting

Cons:
-At times it gets a little too brutal for me
-The ending
-Seligman who was almost another one of the only 2 respectable characters attempts to rape Joe in her sleep(his reasoning is even worse)

I actually hated how it ended. This was just insane. It was interesting and a decent watch. It isn't however something I would watch again or at least not in its entirety. Visually this movie is actually quite nice to look at given the content. If it had ended differently I would have enjoyed this more, but as it stands I didn't really enjoy this volume.

Same as I, but less humour and more pervertion -and a noirish segment- going to a sensationalist and contradictory ending.

The 2nd phase of transformation of middle aged Joe

Posted : 10 years ago on 7 May 2014 08:35

Proceed the from the previous part's review of mine:
Nymphomaniac: Volume I

As the story follows from the volume 1 my review too not much difference because to me, I watched these two parts as a narrow single story. I does liked it for many reasons and one of it was the soundtracks, so awesome. This installment was only slightly different in form of a story. It demonstrates the transformation of the character Joe, from what we had known her in the first.

This movie with two volumes were the final movie of Lars Von Trier's 'depression' trilogy after 'Antichrist' and 'Melacholia'. An astonishing performance by Charlotte Gainsbourg in all the three movie. In fact Von Trier used her perfectly according to the script demanded. All these three movies will be her career best. In some of the scenes I could not believe it and said 'was she did it?'. Yes of course, but filmmakers has a different theory and says they used a body double in sensitive portion of the scenes with the little help of computer magic.

It is an inappropriate movie for the few though well made movie if you consider it is a reality for those who are affected by nymphomania. The movie is available in two versions, explicit and softer edition. So I recommend the people are eager to watch this choose according to your need.

I have already said almost everything in the volume 1 review that is why volume 2 review looks kind of pale. So you can go through that if you have not read yet. #Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 Review. Overall, this duology was one of the best among similar themes, especially who love adult movie with a clean merge of reasonable drama.
