Vastly inferior reload

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 24 March 2022 04:30

While there are better films out there than 'The Matrix', in its genre and as an overall film, it is still a great, impeccably made and awe-inspiring film and ground-breaking in its visuals and sound. It was followed by two sequels, neither of them being absolute travesties but at the same time neither are close to the same level.

Under review is its first sequel 'The Matrix Reloaded'. A film with some great merits that come close to matching how 'The Matrix' executed the same merits. It also suffers from some major flaws, that make it both disappointing and frustrating. Granted the Wachowskis had a mammoth task to follow and it was such a high standard to compete with, so it was always going to be touch and go as to how it was going to come off.

Starting with its good things, once again while not revolutionary 'The Matrix Reloaded' looks wonderful. The production design is still audacious, the special effects dazzling and uber-cool, very slick editing and cinematography that's both clever and imaginative. Once again the music score is hypnotic and haunting, the use of sound having a real sense of eeriness.

'The Matrix Reloaded' benefits from some astonishing set pieces, that benefit from looking great, breathless stunts, a great sense of paranoia, energy and tension and, while rather underused, the villains are interesting.

Acting varies with Keanu Reeves still oozing super-coolness, Carrie Anne Moss bringing strength and vulnerability and Hugo Weaving a commanding presence. As charismatic as Laurence Fishburne is he does take it too seriously here with too much of a heavy approach.

Which is a general problem with 'The Matrix Reloaded' in feeling too heavy and the tone being too serious. It also feels bloated, trying to do too much and also incorporating too many themes and characters, some being not that interesting.

Its writing is messy as well, with so much of the dialogue being cheesy and stilted. The pace surprisingly plods, especially at the beginning that feels endless with scenes that serve little to no point or drag badly, and the finale is convoluted.

In summary, not an awful film but for a reload/sequel it's vastly inferior, even for expectations being so mixed. 5/10 Bethany Cox

The Matrix Reloaded review

An average movie

I remember it very well when this movie was released. Indeed, since 'The Matrix' had quickly became a modern classic and simply one of the most influential movies released in the 90's, the expectations for this first sequel were huge but even though it was still a box-office hit, it turned out to be a critical flop, the first one of a very long streak of failures for the Wachowski siblings. Was I really surprised by the end-result? To be honest, not really. I mean, sure, visually speaking, 'The Matrix' was really impressive and an absolute milestone in this area but, story-wise, half of it didn't make much sense or simply really bored me which was a shame because the original set-up was just fascinating. Well, this sequel pretty much gave me the same feeling : it was really pretty to look at, there were some impressive action scenes (The highway scene must be one of the best chases I have ever seen) but the story was rather silly. In my opinion, the fact that the whole story and mythology started to fall down here shows that the first movie was never really great in the first place but that's a personal theory. At least, Monica Bellucci looked stunning but, of course, her character was really poorly developed, and it's a such a shame she never had a bigger career in the US pretty much because of these underwhelming sequels. Anyway, all in all, even though it was nothing great, I don't think it was so bad either and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

The Matrix Reloaded review

There are some films which deserve a sequel, and there are those which do not; 500 Days of Summer does, Iron Man doesn't. RDJ has played the Tony Stark / Mr. Obnoxiously Cool Guy card one too many times. Same case with The Matrix. Of course, it is one of the coolest trilogies out there, but a complete opposite of the Dollars Trilogy. While the Man With No Name got cooler and cooler each progressing film, Neo went sillier and sillier. Now what makes the first film so great, so important in its genre? Because of its utter isolation. The first film has a foreboding, doomed atmosphere, a dark and unpredictable layer covering it. It is as colourful as Charlie Chaplin's clothes. The sequel - of course, they had to expand the story; nobody understood the first film even after repeated viewings - has a comical, laid-back atmosphere that, to me, totally ruined the complete understanding and logic behind the universe of The Matrix. Indeed, it is clever in the quotes department - "Do we control the machines, or do they control us?" - but like I said they quickly dissolve into silliness that does little to no justice to the first part - "I just love you too damn much!" Seriously, they went from that to this?

Even though this comixed sequel is action-heavy, its dialogues and conversations provide critical understanding to the complexity - and in some cases, simplicity - of what's real and what's not and all the little gaps in-between. I absolutely loved the Neo and The Architect conversation sequence. Biblical references aside, the scene was greatly executed, with brilliant focus on the two characters. To me it's the best non-action part of the series.

Performance-wise, the three leads - Laurence Fishburne, Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss - once again prove to us why they were chosen to play their respective characters in the first place. Once again they were all great, with the former being more badass than he was in the first film. Despite the fact that there were literally hundreds of him running around, I still believe Hugo Weaving received very low screen-time. But the fact that he returned once again to play the iconic villain is more than enough. Jada-Pinkett Smith was an absolute dish in her painfully small role as Captain Niobe. Not much of a performance, but a great presence. The rest of the cast were just OK, nothing too great or memorable, although Monica Bellucci did provide a juicy presence. Ever the sexy eye candy, her seductiveness was positive for once. Helmut Bakaitis, once I found out that his robotic acting was actually supposed to be like that, won me over in his role as The Architect. Overall the best from the film. The line delivery was almost pitch-perfect, or at least to me it was!

In conclusion, The Matrix: Reloaded is positively mind-blowing in the action sequences (the Burly Brawl? Classic!) but is just too silly and comical to be taken seriously... Watch it if you must, but I suggest stop at the first!

The Matrix Reloaded review

After many years I rewatched this movie... And you can't imagine how much I laughed! Oh, this is so bad.
I mean, the first Matrix movie at least has good special effects and an interesting story. In this one (and in the third too) they decided to use more special effects and forget about the story. The fight scene and the car chase touch the border of ridiculous and I really laughed out loud.
The ending was so silly and a bit insulting to my intelligence (Neo have superpowers outside the matrix too). The architech is an annoying character who says "ergo" every 30 seconds so you think he is really smart.
Basicly, forget about the existence of these movie and Revolutions and watch "The Matrix" one or two times.

Pretty Cool....For a Sequal

For a sequal that got so much hate, I liked this movie. Well you could say I am turning into a Matrix geek. I've seen the first about 3 times and finally got around to seeing this, I will say the beiging of the film was very draggy and boring, but it really picked up in suspense and action. The fight scenes are better than the first one, but I wished it was weirder than the first but all in all I liked it, and now I must watch the 3rd one since there is a cliff hanger at the end.

One of the biggest letdowns

It seems like the Wachowski brothers, after being pressured to turn the masterpiece 'The Matrix' into a trilogy, got a bunch of stoned dropouts to write up the script ideas for them. Wow, what a let down.

To sum it up, its just some stupid crap about Neo being superman flying around, fighting off a thousand mr. smiths in a pathetic obvious CG-whore-fest, jumping around on bikes and trucks, lots of explosions, some drivel about a 'keymaster', some drivel about the oracle, some drivel about love between neo and trinity, and some fighting in some weird nightclub. that's all i remember. plot? who needs that when making a sequel to a blockbuster film.

The only good thing about this movie is that it isn't Matrix Revolutions.
