An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 11 March 2015 10:09

Even before watching this movie, I had already some mixed feelings. Indeed, following the massive success of the 'Twiligh' franchise, of course, they decided to adapt another book written by Stephenie Meyer and even though I believe that the hatred towards those movies was vastly exaggerated, I can’t say I enjoyed them either. On the other hand, I have always had a weak spot for Andrew Niccol's work (even 'In Time' was actually decent in my book) so I was really eager to see his latest directing effort. Well, the whole thing actually had some potential, that’s for sure, but it kept rubbing me in the wrong place. I mean, as usual with Niccol, the concept was really intriguing and the double performance by Saoirse Ronan was really good. Indeed, it was including a lot of inner dialogues between 2 distincts personalities reminding me of someone somewhat schizophrenic. Unfortunately, Meyer is notoriously well known for keeping the psychological level of her characters at the lowest level possible so this whole aspect was rather poorly developed. Furthermore, it pretty much lost me towards the end when, suddenly, everything was solved way too easily and the twist at the end was even worse. To conclude, it wasn't really bad but I still don't think it is really worth a look.

A movie which is adapted from a novel wrote by 'Twilight' series fame Stephenie Meyer and directed by one of a promising sci-fi movie maker, Andrew Niccol. Everyone knows how famous the 'Twilight' series was, so like everyone else I had my expectation of this movie. It did not disappoint me, I actually liked everything about it. I thought the theme was good but the development between characters and story was excellent. That means I can't say it was a genuine but somehow very clever than Common mans smartness in thinking.

Most of the people are always expecting great adventures, breathtaking stunts and smart graphics when it comes to an alien invention theme movie. So I guess that's why this movie did not impacted among them. It was an alien invention movie which suits the family audience as well little kids who can understand the cinema.

The story of a teenage girl, Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), attempt to kill herself when enemies try to capture her alive but she fails. In her inquiry she tries hard to protect her dear ones. Once she breaks out from there the adventures begins to hunt her down, blah blah blah....... I love to say everything about the story but I don't want to spoil your own experience with the movie before a watch. So just rent it and decide yourself whether you liked or not.

In my personal opinion this movie was so good and better than 'Twilight' series. People liked 'Twilight' series because of Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson-Taylor Lautner combo, especially the chemistry between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson was really a good. This movie's story was far better than all the four Twilight movies. Actually I compared it because the same writer who wrote it both, other than that it won't fair in comparison. I really give you thumbs up with a smile to go for it.

"The Host" (2013)

Posted : 10 years, 9 months ago on 9 August 2013 05:49

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Needless to say, I went into The Host expecting to hate it. And… I knew this would happen! I expected the absolute worst, so I didn't get it! I mean, don't get me wrong – it's bad – but I was expecting it to be potentially the worst movie of the year.
The premise is that mankind has been almost completely taken over by parasitic aliens. Melanie Stryder is the latest victim, but her own mind remains intact and starts to fight back against the foreign entity in her head, so she's always in two minds.
Now, that sounds like an intriguing sci-fi premise. But the reason Melanie clings on is for the people she loves most. So yes, the aliens are foiled by the power of love! Oh, fuck off!
Another big problem is that, just like Twilight, the characters are all flat as pancakes. So, for instance, we're told that Melanie and Jared are in love, but we never see their relationship develop, so we don't believe it.
You want to know the moment this movie died for me? Early on, when Melanie's fighting for control of the car, the car suddenly leaps into the air just so it can roll off the road. Uh, bullshit! That road was perfectly even; there was no reason for the car to leave the ground!
To sum up, while I didn't hate this movie (again, because I was expecting to), it's still shoddily written and about as sappy as it gets.

My rating: 25%

Another cheesy teenage romance film

Posted : 11 years ago on 26 April 2013 10:26

Based on the 2008 novel by Stephanie Meyer (the Twilight Saga), The Host stumbles right out of the gate, with a terribly paced opening action scene right into a terribly woven script, and it never gets a chance at redemption and it becomes quite possibly the worst films in recent memory

Melanie Stryder is one of few humans remaining on the planet earth after a parasitic life form known as the souls have been taking over human bodies. After Melanie is captured and an alien life form is poised to take over her body, she resists, creating a bond with her suitor known simply as “Wanderer” and later known as “Wanda”. As Melanie begins to search for Jared and her brother Jamie, the struggle between the two continues as Wanda develops into her own being capable of making choices.

There is just nothing redeeming about this film whatsoever, after it turns into an alien romance flick. The opening scene may have been short and misguided, but it had merit. It was an action scene, suffice to say the only one worth noting, but still an action scene none the less. After it turns into a teenage romance flick with lines like “Kiss me like you want to get slapped.” It loses all credibility, not that it really gained any during the first half hour.

It’s just messy, that is one example of dialogue that for lack of a better term is atrocious. It is a simple movie, designed for simple minds with little pay-off. The plot is a one-way street type plot, everything moves at a very pace, creating no reason to want to see what happens or even care about the fact that things are happening. It’s an easy film to grab a few laughs out of and that is not intentional. It was supposed to be a dramatic tale about the acceptance of one’s body and how body image shouldn’t matter and we should accept people for who they are, whatever shape, size and ethnicity they are. Good themes, but only in a good movie. Acceptance is the key, and I accept The Host as another movie that failed miserably in getting teen romance right, but it’s based off Stephanie Meyers novel so there wasn’t high hopes to begin with.

It’s a romance between three people, much the way twilight was except two of them are trapped in Saoirse Ronan’s body for two hours, exploring their developing sexuality in a world that has become a hell whole. Does that sound entertaining to you? Because it was tumultuous ride of teenage aggression, cheesy rain make-out scenes and awkward proclamations of an alien developing it’s sexual feelings for a human.

Part of me wants to give the film some credit and say with a better script it could possibly have been a better movie, but that would just be wrong of me. So I’ll state the truth, a very harsh one, but the truth none the less, and that is there was never a chance that this film could have been good because Meyer only writes for her own self-righteousness and not to raise valid points or try and bring about social changes. So to be completely truthful the Host was doomed to be a terrible movie because it was coming from terrible source material.

I’m not saying don’t see the Host, because plenty of fangirls will be in line loving this movie, but just try and not view it as a serious form of entertainment. It was more comedic then it was dramatic, so hey atleast you might score a few laughs from the appalling screenplay.
