A good movie

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was on the 'They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They' list, I was quite eager to check it out. While watching this movie, I was wondering who Jean Genet actually was. In fact, he only directed this short and mostly wrote some books and poems which were at least as sulfurous and controversial as this only directorial effort. Eventually, Genet had a rather fascinating life, almost even more interesting than his body of work. Anyway, coming back on this short, the damned thing was seriously disturbing and, yet, quite fascinating at the same time. To be honest, it is hardly surprising that it had been banned for decades in most countries. Back then, Genet himself spent many years in prison himself and he gave us a rather bleak look on a French prison in the 50's but, obviously, it went way beyond this. Indeed, it was combined this with some (sometimes very explicit) homo-erotic imagery and the end-result was seriously disturbing. Basically, this mix of filth, hopelessness, violence, virility, sexuality and love was just so weird and, yet, at the same time, actually quite intoxicating and spellbinding to behold. Anyway, eventually, it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in more experimental movies.
