You’ll get lost at sea here

Posted : 10 years, 7 months ago on 28 September 2013 12:18

Many people love 'The Blue Lagoon', I on the other hand found it rather bland, so I didn’t really like the first one but this was even worse, where should I start?

Firstly, they pointlessly changed the ending: at the end of the first one, Richard and Emmeline are thought to asleep and the people who were looking for them found them, now the beginning of this: the ship that finds them just saw them unexpected and now Richard and Emmeline are dead but their son is still alive, that’s like the finders in the first film found them, killed them and left them so that someone else would find their corpses, honestly, the corpses of Richard and Emmeline creep me out

So the beginning doesn’t make sense, secondly, they basically repeated the story but the children are babies when they end up on the EXACT SAME ISLAND!!!

And they get castaway with the girl (Lilli)’s mother (also it’s kind of odd how the boy Richard is the son of the two castaways from the first film)

I can also say of the horrible scenes such as a sailor attempting to kill the children and Sarah (the mother of Lilli) beats him to death and the scene in which a sailor tries to rape Lilli and Richard violently fights the sailor until he is eaten alive by a shark, honestly, there are scenes in which Richard messes with the shark! WHO THE HELL MESSES WITH A SHARK???

I also hate how they now give the creepy cannibals at least 3 minutes of screen time and the baby only like 10 seconds, in the first one, the baby receives 30 minutes of screen time and the cannibals only receive like 5 seconds (the baby’s not creepy like the cannibals)

Milla Jovovich and Brian Krause are the only actors who actually try to give a decent performance, the rest of the cast give weak, painful performances

To conclude (I’ll say nothing else about this terrible sequel, of course don’t be surprised as 95% of sequels are bad anyway), 'Return To The Blue Lagoon' is a terrible sequel to an already average predecessor and is definitely not worth a look, even if you loved the first one or the novel

A very bad movie

Back in the 80’s, ‘ The Blue Lagoon’  was a minor classic, in the sense that it was nothing really amazing but many people (like my wife) actually loved it. I must admit that in spite of its utter cheesiness, there were some elements that actually worked pretty well so, even though I didn’t really like it, I couldn’t completely dismiss it. However, this sequel was a totally different kind of ball game. Indeed, even if the original had some undeniable qualities, this sequel was just downright terrible. Indeed, it is basically the same story but when in the first time around it was far from being realistic, the second time around it was completely unbelievable, stupid and pretty pathetic. I mean, one of the children was the son of the castaways from the original film and they end up on the exact same island! The main (and only) attraction was Milla Jovovich who was just 15 years back then (it was her second movie). She did what she could with this material and I don’t think she should be blame but it is probably the worst movie she has made during her whole career. To conclude, it is just yet another pathetic sequel to an already average movie and it is definitely not worth a look, even if you loved the first installment.

Return to the Blue Lagoon review

The opening scene of this Blue Lagoon is probably one of the worst transitions from original to sequel I have ever seen. However, the story being told I think was slightly more intriguing than the original.
