I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Emma Roberts, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that I never read a 'Nancy Drew' book when I was a kid so I was probably not the targeted audience. Still, it was fairly easy to understand what these Nancy Drew tales were supposed to be about and, in my opinion, Emma Roberts turned out to be a great choice to play the main character. Indeed, not only she totally looked the part but I thought she was quite convincing. Unfortunately, she was pretty much the only thing that really worked in this movie. I mean, the murder mystery was nothing original but it was not bad but the biggest issue was with the time period. Indeed, even though Nancy Drew obviously belonged to the 50's, for some reasons, the makers felt that they had to move her to a more contemporary time frame but that didn't work at all. I mean, basically, Nancy dressed and acted as if she was still living in the 50's while there was around her some modern cars, computers, cellphones,... It felt just jarring as if she had been stuck in a time bubble, unaware of what was going on in the rest of the world. As a result, it made her look like an ignorant small town girl when she was supposed to be the exact opposite, smart and clever. Anyway, even tough the damned thing was supposed to be rather harmless, I thought it was really weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.ย

Oh That Nancy Drew

The plot is pretty decent and goes a different direction, than I expected.
Emma Roberts is a good Nancy Drew. I've played the games with my 2 sisters and their funny and even creepy in the dark hahah good times..anyways, Emma suits the role exceptionally well. The ending is above average and it's a good film to watch for the curious. haha
Rating: 7.3/10

Much better than I anticipated
Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 14 December 2007 10:38I am a huge fan of the Nancy Drew books but when I saw the trailer for the big screen adaptation I was sorely disappointed. I didn't like the decision to skew for a younger audience and the Nancy Drew on-screen was nothing like what I pictured - she was a miss goody two shoes, a know it all, in a word, obnoxious.
But after someone recommended giving the movie a try I checked it out and I'm glad I did. The basic story involves Nancy Drew accompanying her father, a lawyer, to Hollywood for a few months with the promise of no more sleuthing. But soon Nancy is knee-deep in solving the mystery of a movie star's death some 20 years earlier.
Though the mystery is more on par with Murder She Wrote than CSI, I still had fun watching it. There are some cheesy scenes - a few of them appeared in the trailer that caught my ire but still it doesn't detract much from the movie. Even more surprising was how much I liked Emma Robert's portrayal of Nancy Drew - she's an independent, determined girl with a cool sense of fashion. A bit obsessive compulsive at times but still adorable and spunky.
In spite of my initial reserve towards this movie, I actually wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.
