Monty Python and the Holy Grail review

Posted : 2 weeks, 5 days ago on 21 April 2024 01:36

Monty Python and the Holy Grail review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 18 March 2022 07:12

After the brilliant Life of Brian, I was looking forward to watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And I loved it, I don't think it is quite as good as Life of Brian, but it is definitely one of the better Monty Python comedies for sheer hilarity and fun. The story like Life of Brian isn't the strongest component but this is in no way a criticism and yes the special effects are cheesy but perhaps that was the intention. My only problem with the film was that the ending is a little flat, but that is a minor criticism compared to how much I loved this film. The script is irreverent and highly quotable, and the soundtrack is even funnier. As a comedy it is wonderfully inventive, that debunks the Dark Ages and legends of chivalry through King Arthur, The Black Knight, God and the "knights who say ni". Comedy highlights include the trial with Connie Booth's witch and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch sequence. Even the sets are quite well designed and authentic. And the acting is simply wonderful, John Cleese, Terry Jones(the encounter with Dennis's mother was hilarious), Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Eric Idle perfectly live up to their exceptional talents. Overall, a great comedy and a great film. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

A classic

Posted : 8 years, 9 months ago on 3 August 2015 07:29

Since I kept hearing some great things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and I had some great expectations about the damned thing. Indeed, it was the Monty Python's first 'real' movie and it has been a huge classic ever since. I remember it very well, one of my oldest childhood friends was really a huge fan and wouldn’t stop telling me that it was one of the greatest movies ever made. I ‘m pretty sure I saw this flick with him the first time around. Eventually, to my surprise, I didn’t like it much. Basically, I was never able to really connect with the jokes and I always found them more stupid than actually funny. By now, I have watched this movie already a couples of times and I have never actually really enjoyed it. I don't know, maybe I should give it another try. If I’m not mistaken, it was the first movie made by the Monty Python that I saw and, except with ‘Life of Brian’ which is indeed one of the best movies ever made, I didn’t really love any of their movies so I guess their humor is not for me. Anyway, to conclude, even though I’m not a huge fan of this movie, it is still pretty much a classic so you should check it out, especially if you like the genre.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail review

There's something about feature films that brings out the best in the Pythons. The occasional indulgence of the TV series is replaced by a more focused approach which wrings every conceivable joke out of a given subject. While Holy Grail falls short of Life Of Brian's comic masterpiece status, it has more than enough killer lines, sight gags and inspired absurdity to qualify as a medieval-on-your-ass laff-riot.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail review

The first time I watched it, when I was 11 years old, I had to leave the room crying from laughing so hard. To this day I crack up at the ridiculousness of this movie. Sure it's not the best acting or comedic lines, but that's what makes it great. One of the best spoof movies to start a revolution of them years to come. Servants carrying coconuts and banging them together to imitate horses? Brilliant I say!
This is definitely geared toward the teenage male audience, still thousands of people love this film. It is personally my favorite movie along with L.O.T.R trilogy.

Hmm... don't see what's so funny about this one...

This is a film that quite a lot of people would call a classic but I don't think it is that much of a classic but a really good film. There are reasons for this. The story was funny but was in a little bit of a mess. Yes, I do realise it is a silly slapstick film but I feel it was a bit too silly if you get what I mean. It was really funny don't get me wrong but I think that there were some scenes within the film that I personally think weren't relevant. The characters were very funny as I said. The story is fun and adventurous with a clever comedy experience especially from us British. I was unsure about Holy Grail to start with because it seemed like a film with sketches. Basically, like a TV British comedy show. When I think that mostly adults of this generation in our world love it more than teens and young adults do now because the adults nowadays would have grown up with that sort of comedy which could become childhood favourites to them.

John Cleese was funny as Sir Lancelot. John is the best British comedy actor ever. This is one of John's earliest works and as far as films are concerned, he will be best remembered for Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and particularly A Fish Called Wanda (in my opinion). John's crude slapstick led him to Fawlty Towers which is in my opinion the greatest comedy show of all time. Watching Cleese portray Lancelot was like watching a character from a fictional story. Michael Palin was pretty funny as Sir Galahad but doesn't sum up to watching Archie and Ken in A Fish Called Wanda. This film was made up by the whole team of Monty Python.

Terry Gilliam directed this film pretty well with a lot of hilarious yet utterly stupid moments. The script was awful but I am laughing because of that and it is part of the story. This is a short review because I find it hard to describe. Overall, Monty Python And The Holy Grail is a hilarious and stupid comedy that is a load of fun but no classic.

Best Viewed with a Large Group of People

The "Holy Grail" is a dopey, silly bit of silliness that is best experienced with a group of people. Preferably this group of people should have seen the movie before and be drunk with merriment (or just drunk). Discussing your favorite line, doing lines with the movie or making fun of the movie is half the joy. When watching it by yourself it isn't nearly as good. It's a little slow to get started, they overdo some jokes and the visual quality is poor. However the "Killer Rabbit" and "Bridge of Death" are still good, even by yourself. With a good group of people, this movie is a 10, by yourself it's more like a 6.
