The Marine 4: Moving Target review

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 9 April 2015 08:57

Initial Thought: Oh good lord another direct to DVD sequel. The sub-title itself is just very mediocre. I do think it's good that they finally have an actor stick with the franchise for once. Too bad no one else returns to the series. The funny thing is the previous film is my least favorite while the second one (still crap) was my highest rated out of those entries.

Characters/Acting: Well the two biggest names here are in WWE so not sure that tells you the acting will be all that good. The acting is actually not all that bad and the characters are somewhat interesting. The witty banter here is amusing and well executed. I would have liked to see more from Summer Rae seeing as she is on the poster.

Story: Is there really much to the story? It's a WWE produced entry into a undying direct to DVD action series. So I seriously doubt there will be much ingenuity. This has a pretty recognizable formula that includes a person being hunted down for the secrets they hold of an organization. Nothing really new to see as expected, but the action is pretty entertaining. The cliche plot twists are at times shown quite a bit earlier than I had expected to see. The forest traps seemed like a homage to the Wrong Turn films where we see that kind of thing a lot.

Directing/Writing: This guy has mostly done direct to DVD films starring Cuba Gooding Jr. Only one of his very few films is above 5. He doesn't set my expectations very high. I didn't know this, but the guy who wrote this also did Spawn, the first 5 Wrong Turn films (which slowly went down entry by entry though), and the fourth Halloween. He also returns after only writing the first installment of this series.

Final Thoughts: Okay so this was actually much better than expected. Yeah maybe the name sucks and there are quite a few cliches, but this was actually a pretty enjoyable action flick. I would even go so far as to saying this has to be the best of the series. Everyone involved really stepped their game up on this. No it isn't the best thing around. It does however make a good time filler.
