Loving Vincent (2017) review

Posted : 6 months ago on 4 November 2023 09:46

A good movie

Since I kept hearing some interesting things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I struggled a little bit to judge this movie. I mean, on one hand, it was visually so impressive, it felt like diving in so many Van Gogh paintings which would then come to live and this concept was just so creative, artistic and spellbinding to behold. However, on the other hand, even though Van Gogh did paint only for a rather short period of time, he did eventually become one of the most famous painters and by now there has been so many movies about him, many more than about other artists. Well, in this case, unfortunately, beside its incredible visual concept, this movie didn't have such an interesting tale to tell, I'm afraid. I mean, there were a couple of interesting ideas, for example, I did like going back where Van Gogh lived and worked before he became really famous. However, who was this guy Armand Roulin? He seemed to be a really random choice to play the lead and the fact that we didn't learn anything about him and that nothing really noteworthy happened to him either didn't help at all. Then, during his journey, he kept interviewing people who did see Van Gogh from time to time but eventually they barely had a relationship with him after all so it was hardly surprising that they all contradicted each other. Finally, the idea of turning the final hours of Van Gogh into a murder mystery might have sounded promising on paper but it was rather misguided after all. I mean, it was a known fact that the guy was heavily tormented and, even if he didn't shoot himself, he probably still wanted to die anyway so this whole goose chase felt rather pointless after all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a visually fascinating movie, something completely unique, and only therefore it is definitely worth a look.

Proof that an exciting concept is not enough to build a movie off of when you forget to populate with something beyond stimulating visuals. Loving Vincent is more of a film’s theory than an actuality, and it borrows artistic ambition and merit by piggybacking onto van Gogh’s work. Paintings that exude vitality, life, and passion like Starry Night become merely wallpaper to a tedious story that’s an approximation of coming of age story and limp murder mystery populated by characters who exist entirely to provide biographical info dumps.

Loving Vincent is an animated film created in the style of Vincent van Gogh, combining both his own masterpieces and newly created pieces by artistic collaborators hired by the directors. If you watch the entire film on mute, then it becomes a gold star classic for the ages as it moves with large swaths of color combinations in dramatic tension or romantically sweeping across the frame. It’s the story that sinks the whole thing.

For a film titled after the genius artist, Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo exist in the film as mere concepts and not as characters. This is a pity as they are endlessly fascinating persons. Instead, we’re stuck with Douglas Booth’s Armand Roulin as he tries to deliver the last letter of Vincent’s, meets up with several people that knew van Gogh during his final days, and begins to believe in various conspiracies theories about the artist’s death. Was it a murder or a suicide? The film presents unconvincing evidence for the former before finally conceding that it more than likely was the latter.

Shackling van Gogh’s gorgeous, mysterious artwork to such a non-involving story results in a film that feels only half-formed. Loving Vincent quickly turns from glorious achievement to middling exercise to, finally, a dull copy-and-paste affair. It’s a series of beautiful images in search of a compelling story, and a compelling story was right there all along in the emotional turbulence in the brief lives of Vincent and Theo.

Unlike other animated films this without Telling jokes, could Be entertained
Personally, while they are animation, they are good

The Animation is the best without doubt. not only the best of the year but one of the best of all time. you notice an effort of the animation here

the development is also remarkable how the protagonist. who initially did not care about the case and then took it as almost family.

The music, even if something unnoticed happened, it did well

And Yes I take 2 perfect movies ALMOST FOLLOWED

the movie is unique and sensational
the most negative criticism I can understand. that if it was boring

although still those who know the story of van gooh or are interested you may like
in fact. I saw more seniors in the room

but I feel that this may be interesting and may be worth going. to the movies or not
so if you want to see it depends on your decision or tastes
