A good movie
Posted : 8 years ago on 17 April 2016 09:17The last time I saw my sister, she bought me a DVD-box with the complete work of Xavier Dolan so that's how I ended up watching his movies. With this 2nd directing effort, there was an interesting evolution from 'J'ai tué ma mère', Nolan's directing debut, and it was definitely something more ambitious. Indeed, he obviously spent more time on making some interesting shots combining those with a very nice soundtrack. Furthermore, this movie was much less straightforward and it felt almost like an impressionist painting which was definitely intriguing. However, it also slightly backfired since the whole thing felt really obscure and you never get the opportunity to really learn the characters involved. I guess it didn’t help either that all the characters were speaking in French with a rather thick Quebec accent and I wish they had included some subtitles. At the end of the day, it was maybe too superficial to really sweep me away. Still, it was definitely another approach towards love compared to your typical romantic feature and this originality was more than welcome. To conclude, even though it was not a masterpiece, I thought it was pretty neat, this director keeps intriguing me and I can’t wait to see the rest of his work.
