An average movie

Posted : 5 years ago on 21 April 2019 06:36

Since I really enjoyed 'Gerald's Game', I was quite eager to see another directing effort from Mike Flanagan and since this one was available on Neflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with one location and basically two characters, it must have been the most minimalist thriller I have seen and I definitely have a weak spot for such minimalist features, especially when they are well put together. Still, even though Flanagan managed to make the most of it, I'm afraid it was still missing something though. For example, in 'Gerald's Game' which also had a really small scale, they added a youth trauma to the main character which created a very interesting extra layer. Here, however, it was extremely simplistic and the whole thing was pretty much reduced to an endless cat-and-mouse game between the killer and the main character. Furthermore, did the fact that the main character was deaf and mute really provided some added value? I'm not so sure. I mean, since they were in the middle of nowhere, she just could have been screaming, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. On top of that, I was rather surprised that, even though the main character was deaf and mute, the movie relied a lot on sound effects and music and I would have chosen to put many more silent scenes but that was apparently something that didn't interest Flanagan. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent cheap horror flick and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

I was really curious about this one after seeing the trailer for it. Is there going to be any dialogue? Why is she alone in the middle of the woods if she is mute and deaf? Will this actually be any good? Mike Flanagan writes and directs this just as he did with Oculus. That was an average movie. The main star here also takes part in the writing. This should be interesting. Oh okay thank goodness there are people who talk in this. I don't think her freaking out in sign language to the attacker for the whole movie would have been very interesting. Unless of course it was a short film. Holy shit dude. That was insane and brutal. I like how we get hear from her perspective throughout. This guy likes to play offensive games with his prey. That was pretty damn creepy. Dude that's just not right! I was wondering when he would show up. I would never have trusted that for a second. OMG! I should have realized what just happened considering her whole seven endings scenario with her book. That was really intelligent. Oh I didn't expect that to happen. Nicely done. Oh good lord! Ouch! That was badass. What a great ending to a great movie. Heroes with disabilities are quite interesting. She really pulled it off. In fact if her performance was nominated for an Oscar I honestly think she did better than Leo in The Revenant lol. Unfortunately most horror movies are overlooked for Oscars. Then again not many are worthy of the notion. Anyways this was excellent. It answered all the questions I had before going in. It's on Netflix so give it a shot. It's quite unique and well worth it.
