An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 8 months ago on 23 August 2018 08:19

I already saw this movie but since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though this movie was a critical and commercial flop when it was released, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. Indeed, the whole thing looked amazing, the action scenes were badass and they managed to nail the mood of the original Japanese animated feature. However, even if the story was decent enough, unfortunately, they did make some mistakes though. Of course, there was the whole controversy about casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role and I think she was indeed miscast but not because she is not Asian. I mean, since Johansson is one of the only bankable actresses in the world, it completey made sense that the producers chose her so the whole white-washing controversy was rather ridiculous and even Mamoru Oshii, the director of 'Kokaku Kidotai', gave his blessing. What bother me with her was the fact she was just too small to play the Major (1,60 meters), she wasn’t physically threatening enough and I never had the feeling that she was actually a lethal killing machine. Furthermore, even though she is usually a decent actress, I thought she gave a rather weak performance which was rather surprising since she complained nailed it a couple of years ago with a similar character in ‘Under the Skin’. On the other hand, she wasn’t helped by the fact that they pretty much ruined her character. Indeed, one of the major trademarks of ‘Ghost in Shell’ is the fact that the Major is a cold, mysterious and ambiguous character. The fact that she might be struggling with her identity was always only implied and never really stated but, in this US version, it became a major focus which completely changed this character and, in the process, she became just too weak and emotional. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think that it could have been so much worse and I believe it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Ghost in the Shell review

Posted : 5 years, 9 months ago on 4 August 2018 06:39

So glad they did the anime/manga justice and didn't just turn this into a mindless effects and action movie (though there is plenty of both). The philosophical quandaries remain and the stunning aesthetics serve to recreate the world around the Major. I loved the more in depth elaboration into the characters and events.

It was a downright pleasure seeing scenes so familiar to me come to literal life before me, and I actually greatly enjoyed the changes made. I just wish they would of marketed it the right way so it could have found it's audience. Even then, it would be a small one on account of the ludicrous and unfounded "white-washing" controversy. But, hey, I'm just glad I got to see this movie happen at all.

Ghost in the Shell review

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 27 March 2018 10:17

Let me start this review by pointing out the obvious: Western adaptations of Japanese manga and anime have a very bad reputation among viewers, both casual and hardcore, because they don't properly adapt the source material and because they are overall bad. Since I'm not familiar with the original manga or its anime adaptations, I'll do my best to judge this movie by its own merits rather than any preconceptions about what should be or shouldn't be in it.

Spoiler alert!

The movie is set in a world where the line between flesh and technology becomes more blurred and thin, with people outfitting themselves with cybernetic implants and parts to enhance their physical and mental prowess. The protagonist, Major Mira Killian, is part of a special unit that works to prevent the misuse of such technology and comes across a terrorist threat that might hold a clue about her forgotten past.

Aside from my lack of familiarity with the source material, another thing that prevents me from getting fully invested in the premise is my reluctance towards the cyberpunk genre. The idea of a dark, cynical atmosphere with highly advanced technology, corporations enslaving the common people and a stoic, emotionally disinterested protagonist is a tough sell to a modern mainstream audience. It can be done but, then again, that argument goes both ways.

The sole positive aspect of this movie's presentation is the visual effects, which are absolutely beautiful. The advertisements, machines and environments are the only thing the movie does justice. Everything else is awful. The dialogue is 50% exposition about the world these characters inhabit and 50% pointless conversations about themes like humanity vs technology, quest for identity, companionship, etc. Also, the movie tries to remind you of its title by inserting some variation of "Ghost in the Shell'' into a conversation.

The acting is dull and borderline lifeless. The actors are just reading lines from a script, there's barely any humanity or nuance in their performances and if the intention was for them to come off as stiff and robotic as the machines that surrounded, then congratulations! I don't think Scarlett Johansson is a bad actress, but she's pretty bad in this movie. She makes no effort to inject some of her charisma into her performance and her character has no noticeable development throughout the movie. The only actor with a genuinely good performance here is Takeshi Kitano, who only has a supporting part in this movie.

There are two villains in this movie: first, there is the aforementioned terrorist connected to the Major's past and then there's an evil businessman who just wants to get rich. I'm utterly baffled by the movie's willingness to paint the terrorist as a victim of society when the Major points out that he has broken the law and endangered innocents. As for the second villain, he comes off as clichéd and unoriginal and only antagonizes the Major because the movie realizes the terrorist has become too sympathetic and still needs a villain to fill out its runtime. The final battle is likely to remind some of RoboCop's fight with the ED-209.

As for the movie's big twist, the Major is Motoko Kusanagi. No, seriously, that's her name. According to the manga, "Motoko Kusanagi" is an obvious pseudonym and the Major's real name is left unrevealed, but because the movie lazily tries to tie into the manga it's based on, we're left with this so-called reveal that just barely qualifies as fanservice for manga fans.

Since I haven't read the manga or watched the anime, comparing this movie to the source material would be unfair, so I tried to interpret it as a standalone movie and nothing more. Even so, is this a good movie? No, it isn't. It's lifeless, bland and doesn't have anything to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Skip it.

Americanized Ghost in the shell

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 17 August 2017 02:57

Karate kid, beauty and the beast, ghost in the shell, what do they have in common? They were made in the 80s or 90s and in 2010s it get poorly remakes. And what I mean by that is not a remake but exactly same story but not give a damn of respect the first version. This movie is no exception.

A young girl called Major is waking up from a horrible dream only to realize her knightmare has begun. She is now dead, a ghost inside a doll or a robot. One year later she is recruited with Batou with section 9 to eliminate the biggest enemy hacker Kuze. But is her really the enemy?

Is this white washing movie?

Not really, I prefer to call it an Americanized movie based on Japanese manga and anime. But it still doesn't make it a good movie. Specially with comparison to the classic 1994 movie with thyou same title.

What makes it so bad?

It's not bad, just not carefully done. Even though I love Scarlet Johanson as an actress, she is not convincing as a doll, but she not the only one. The whole cast is unbelievable, for a high budget movie like this one can expect at least half good, but no one is doing a good job except Takeshi Kitano but he is alone on the field the rest is mix of bad, not convincing enough or amateurish. My question is what's going in Hollywood? The biggest industry in the world and this I see the best? I hope not.

But still I give it 5/10 because the special effects are stunning and I guess those are the money went too. And it has a lot of action that action lovers will adore but as a ghost in the shell fan, it's not worth it, watch the 1994 version instead and it's sequels.

"Ghost in the Shell" (2017)

Posted : 6 years, 11 months ago on 4 June 2017 03:12

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: a human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals.

Let me preface this by saying I haven't read the Ghost in the Shell manga – I've only seen the classic 1995 movie – so I came at this movie from a different perspective than a hardcore fan might: I was simply comparing one movie to another. As a remake, it gave me a somewhat different story, yes, but it came across to me as an extremely derivative one. A cyborg getting flashes of memory from their past life and trying to figure out their identity? Now, where have I heard that before? Yeah, you get my drift: the plot is literally just RoboCop! Any similarities to Ghost in the Shell are purely superficial references, like the invisible street fight, the underwater scene and the climactic tank battle. (Speaking of which, that scene seems surprisingly so much smaller and less grandiose than the animated version.)

Even the villain is a letdown: gone is the fascinating Puppet Master, to be replaced by just another victim of the corrupt system.

I liked the original film, but it didn't wow me like it did so many other people. But even so, I found this movie to be an insult to its predecessor. It's dull, uninspired, and apparently owes more to RoboCop than it does to Ghost in the Shell.

My rating: 40%

Ghost in the Shell review

Ghost in the Shell review

All Shell, No Ghost

Posted : 7 years, 1 month ago on 6 April 2017 10:10

On the one hand, Ghost in the Shell isn't a disaster. Given the history of videogame and anime movie adaptations, that's a considerable accomplishment. At the very least, it drew a faithful real-life portrait of the cyberpunk world of Ghost in the Shell and hit most of the iconic action beats of the original animated film. On the other hand, it tossed most of the important themes and potent atmosphere (the things that make GitS great) out the window in pursuit of a simplified, easily digestible plot. The dialogue lacked any nuance and the best modern CG and special effects don't look as good or feel as compelling as the hand drawn animation of 22 years ago.

The movie is at its best in the action scenes where thermoptic camouflage comes to life and when the creepy geisha bots and other maliciously hacked technology instill the cold blooded potential of transhumanism in our psyche. Also good are the quieter moments when Batou feeds the neighborhood dogs (including a basset hound, of course) and the Major quietly explores the world, searching for her place in it. The movie loses its way when the driving force of the plot becomes the scandal behind how the Major was created (instead of the much more important philosophical question about what her existence means) and the villain emerges as the most typical of bad guy cliches.

There's also some glaring hypocrisy in the ending (spoiler) since our heroic characters have been going on about justice and not killing people, and in the climax, they summarily execute the villain instead of bringing him to justice. The Major, in fact, explicitly calls for this, even though she was the most vocal opponent of unjust killing and human rights abuse throughout the film. Character motivation? Consistency? Feh. You can certainly argue that the villain deserved to die, but ordering an execution of someone who's surrendered makes every word the Major spoke earlier feel completely hollow.

Despite its flaws, I felt engaged. It was well paced, the casting was solid and the acting was serviceable. It was competently filmed, if not dazzling in its angles. I never once looked at my watch (always a good sign) and there were moments, such as Batou losing his human eyes to cybernetic eyes, that offered something different from the animated films and were genuinely cool to see in live action.

It's definitely worth a watch, but I wouldn't rush to the theater to see it. This movie feels like it was tailor made for streaming services to cure your boredom on a rainy afternoon or quiet evening. If you're a GitS fan, you'll almost definitely enjoy it more if you approach this adaptation with low expectations. As a film, it's only slightly better than mediocre, and yet, I was prepared for so much worse. So, while it's a back-handed compliment, I feel like this is the best GitS adaptation that could have been made by the creatively bankrupt Hollywood of 2017. The brilliance of Mamoru Oshii was never within their reach.
