An average movie

Posted : 1 month, 2 weeks ago on 12 March 2024 12:20

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I don’t think it was bad at all. Indeed, there was something really genuine about these 4 characters and the cast involved was pretty good, especially Olivia Wilde who probably delivered here her best performance so far. Eventually, it reminded me somehow of ‘Past lives’, my favorite movie from 2023, and it is definitely a compliment, even if Joe Swanberg’s directorial effort never became really amazing though. Of course, the fact that none of the characters was really fascinating was probably an issue but I think I was mostly bothered by the constant drinking and the constant flirting, at work and outside. Sure, with such a title, it was to be expected but it didn’t seem to be really healthy (the fact that I really don’t like alcohol drinking probably didn’t help). Furthermore, even if they were working for a brewery, it was weird to see them drinking so often, during their lunch break for example, while they were actually at work. Then, there was the constant flirting between Kate and Luke. I know, some people love to engage this way with their co-workers but I really don’t like this kind of behavior, especially when the flirters are actually already involved in some relationships. In fact, the constant boozing and constant flirting with someone unavailable also reminded me of ‘Temptation Island’ (I have to admit it, this TV-reality show was a huge guilty pleasure of mine at some point) but I’m afraid it’s not really a compliment this time. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Honestly, I picked this movie because of the cast choice and the plot seemed interesting. But once I started watching, all kinds of memories came up -- the friendship between Kate and Luke reminds me of a friendship I shared with a guy friend years ago (we no longer talk now, which is sad) but it was nice to see that flow so nicely in this movie. The cast was fantastic and the movie isn't too slow paced. I recommend.

Until the Very Last Line

The only way I can describe this movie is by saying that it's like one of those Dan Chaon stories from "Stay Awake" where, until the very last line, you have no idea what the story is about.

In this case, maybe by the end of the credits....

It's a very subtle film. I liked it because I have this tendency of being able to figure out what a movie is about before it starts, but this one really demanded a lot of patience, not just in some single plot line that you didn't expect, but really in the totality of the the whole thing you didn't know what it was about until maybe after it was over.

Drinking Buddies review

Anna Kendrick means for me this is a must watch. Jake Johnson is definitely one of my faves now due to New Girl. Everybody else is alright. Joe Swanberg has been in a lot of movies I've seen. As a director I have only seen his V/H/S segment. Hmm well all the characters are likable so far. It seems one couple really loves each other while the other seems a bit distant. It really feels like a slice of life sort of film. Not much is really happening while at the same time it feels a good amount of things are happening. I mean I wondered when that would happen. The chemistry between all of them is so strong. I wonder how this will all turn out. How can you turn that down? Of course though it would have been better if Anna Kendrick did it. I figured that was about to happen. These characters have a lot of interesting dynamics among them. He is way more faithful than the other guy. That was a cute little ending. It really is just a slice of life sort of story. Not much happens while still there is a good amount of conflict with certain things. It's enjoyable for what it is.
