After Dark Horrorfest - The Deaths of Ian Stone review

Posted : 7 years, 7 months ago on 2 October 2016 07:21

I'm starting off my horror month with this one. The premise is what really caught my eye for my October Horrorthon list. It has a few decent actors which is a plus. I also like the After Dark Horrorfest films. I wish they would still do them, but it seems they have sort of died off now. This is Dario Piana's only other movie after the average and unnecessary third part in the Lost Boys trilogy. Brendan Hood has only written one other film that I haven't heard of before. Anyways let's see if this was worth opening my fest with.

It kind of reminded me of a few movies including Haunter, The Matrix, Total Recall, and Groundhog Day. While it may be quite familiar it really does bring it's own creativity to the mix. It's not as gory as I was expecting it to be. That really didn't bother me though. It was one hell of a thrill ride with some interesting twists and turns. It's a whole heck of a lot of fun too. Sure it can be a little cheesy at times especially with the ending. I have to say though I was pleasantly entertained.

I loved the characters. Everyone was interesting and likable. Mike Vogel held his own here. Jaime Murray is stunning as always and makes for a fun time. I thought Michael Feast and Christina Cole has pretty good roles that they played well. The creature designs were kind of cool although they kind of felt and looked like death eaters. It really wasn't bad CGI on them either.

All in all I thought this was a pretty solid start to my October Horrorthon. It's got the creepy factor. It has a few crazy deaths and some decent blood. The creatures were interesting. The characters were all intriguing and well portrayed. It has some good twists and turns. It can be cheesy and has a familiarity about it. Though it does bring it's own fun elements that sets it apart. I would watch it again. After Dark hardly disappoints in my opinion.

Starts good but...

The movie starts with some cool camera cuts and some neat effects. But the story is just too lame. It's too predictable and for me it does not make a sense... but if you just want some action the movie might be right for you :-)
