Death Proof review

Cool filming, cool music, good acting, a very good work on image, but, Quentin Tarantino have to write a scenario with a real story before starting filming.

An acquired taste

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 09:28

A couple of weeks ago, I was finally able to see 'Grindhouse' and even though I liked it, it was definitely not a masterpiece, above all because the 'Death Proof' segment was really disappointing. So, I was rather apprehensive before watching this longer version but, after all, to my surprise, I thought it was not that bad after all. It was still nothing really amazing though. Indeed, there was barely any story at all and no character development whatsoever. Some of the dialogues were cool and funny but most of it was just some useless chit-chat between the characters. In fact, even Tarantino himself considers this movie the weakest he has made so far. So why did I like it anyway ? It is probably because it was the 2nd time I saw it, I knew what to expect and my expectations were rather low this time. Furthermore, the soundtrack was very good and Tarantino knows how to direct a movie, that's for sure. To conclude, I think is an acquired taste but it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in Quentin Tarantino's work. However, if you have to choose between watching 'Grindhouse' or 'Death Proof', keep in mind that 'Death Proof' was never intended to be watched as a stand-alone feature so you should definitely go for 'Grindhouse', it is much more interesting and fun to watch.

Come sempre, grazie Quentin.

Peccato, perchè Death Proof deve durare quella mezz'ora in meno, come era previsto.

You can never be disappointed by Tarantino. Though this film basically lacks of character developments and many things are left incomplete, the brilliant dialogues and the car races won't make you regret it. Such an awesome ending too! Girls rock, and Evil!Psycopath fails! Thank you Q!

Decent enough for entertainment...

To be absolutely fair here, I was unsure of what to expect with this film when I was going to see if for the first time. Well, first of all, it is a film from Quentin Tarantino and I love his work but it didn't really look like a typical Tarantino film. When I saw this film for the first time, I really enjoyed it but after a rewatch I found it pretty boring on occasions. The flaws it has are that the film lacks character development and very slow dialogue that took forever to get going. I really enjoyed the car crashing between the two cars around the end of the film. That almost kept me on the edge of my seat because I enjoyed it so much. The violence within this film was really gruesome especially with that blonde girl who was Stuntman Mike's first victim. If that scene wasn't on this film, I would have rated this film 2-stars instead of 3-stars so that scene made a big difference. This film reminds me of Steven Spielberg's Duel.

Kurt Russell's performance as Stuntman Mike wasn't so much bad but it was a rather weird performance because it's obvious that he does have some psychological problems by killing the passengers inside his car. Stuntman Mike is a an absolute psycho who just likes to have fun but takes things a little over the top. He is a bit of a serial killer because he kills women in the car numerously but he doesn't kill them with his bare hands; like he doesn't touch them or anything. It's really the car that kills them. Rosario Dawson is a cool actress but I think she lost the plot by starring in this one. I think she was chosen to be in this film because she is a black woman and she is really hot!

I personally think Quentin Tarantino sort of lost the plot with this film because it felt more like a Fast And Furious film. I don't really like racing films very much but Death Proof obviously caught my attention because of it being a Quentin Tarantino film. The directing in the action scene near the end was terrifically crafted but everything else became a bit of a mess. Quentin has always been a director of original scripts, cool characters and gory violence. He has that in Death Proof but this time they aren't half as good as they were in Kill Bill: Volumes 1+2, Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, Inglourious Basterds and especially Pulp Fiction. I don't think that Quentin was the right director to make this film; maybe Robert Rodriguez would've done a better job at making this a good film.

Overall, Death Proof is a disappointing yet an explosive, intense mayhem that could've been a lot better.

High octane fun

Achieves what it sets out to do. Look at it as anything other than a Grindhouse B-Movie production and you're going to be disappointed. It was great to be reminded of movies like Vanishing Point, Russ Meyer's 'Supervixen's' amongst all the other numerous referenced within. Its no award winner but Death Proof has re-opened a door to a world of movies I need to re-watch. An ending this satisfying will be hard to find amongst them, even I am not that dumb to take on three women.

Death Proof review

The Good:

- Kurt Russel. He just eminates coolness. He looks better than ever too. Also his portrayal of the menacing antagonist is very convincing (until near the end of the movie).

- The music. A very fine and fitting selection as in all Tarantino movies.

- The cars. Beauties to behold. A Tarantino standard too.

The Bad:

- The performances of the female actors. Mediocre at best.

- The dialogues. Tarantino got that better (with Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction). If he wanted us to endure this tedious movie, he should have made the dialogues at least interesting or witty.

The Ugly:

- The story. Where is it? "Death Proof" is almost like a reality soap about three little red ridinghoods talking trash until the motiveless big bad wolf comes out of nowhere and devours them. I've seen more story in most slasher movies.

- Character development. Absolutely missing. Not only there is none of it, the characters also get out of role for no or very little reason (see the overacted part of Kurt Russel's supposedly cool character near the end). Also at no point in the movie you ever care about any of the characters. They live, they die? Who gives a damn. You just hope it all ends one way or the other.

- The ending. A huge disappointment. Absoultely unrealistic (if you can call anything in this movie realistic) and destroying any of the poor character development.

All in all Death Proof is a weak, outright boring movie that's undoubtedly stylish, but very empty.

Grindhouse: Death Proof

Death Proof was a little slow in the beginning, but it worked in the end for me. Tracie Thoms was funny, the acting was pretty good, the deaths were Mortal Kombat worthy, and the end was great! This film was uncredibly underrated, because it is definately worthy of purchase.

another quentin classic

Death Proof is the second half of Grindhouse the 2 movie feature that bombed (surprisingly ) in theaters. Death Proof stars Kurt Russell in his most badass role since John Carpenter's "Escape From New Tork".Russell plays stuntman mike a no nonsense no bullshit pychopath who kills people with his "Death Proof" car. the one thing that the this movie lacks is the story line. But, the suspense is very much there. with Zoe Bell hanging on top of the hood of a car in an 18 minute car chase. And the enoyable dialogue which is allways hullarious. kurt Russell's very good acting (in this movie) and plenty of good cameos "Death Proof" is sure to please all Tarrantino fans. co-stars Vannessa Ferlito, mary Elizabeth Winstead,Rose Mc Gowan, and Rosario Dawson.
