A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 13 July 2011 08:02

Before Gerard Butler finally had his breakthrough with ‘300’, he showed up in this rather obscure and forgotten movie. Well, even though I wasn’t really expecting much, I was actually positively surprised by the damned thing as it turned out to be a really solid drama. I have to admit it, the story was actually rather far-fetched but the directing and, above all, the acting were just so good that it made the whole thing quite spellbinding to watch. Furthermore, I was also impressed by the end which managed to give a whole new perspective on this tale and it made me appreciate this movie even more. Concerning Gerard Butler, after ‘300’ turned out to be a box-office success, he would then split his time between  some action flicks or some romantic features. Well, even though his 1st romantic feature at the time (‘P.S. I Love You’) turned out to be a cult-classic (my step-daughter is for example a huge fan), I didn’t care much for it and his following romantic movies turned out to be really lame. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though the whole thing was not flawless, I thought it  was still a very touching and emotional drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Dear Da...

Posted : 16 years ago on 3 May 2008 07:38

Dear Frankie is a family story set in Glasgow, where Lizzie has been lying to her nine-year-old son for years, that his father is a sailor, and has had no chance yet to visit him. Suddenly father's (purported) ship is listed in the shipping new as coming into the harbour... So Lizzie has to find a dad, and quick. Sounds comedic, but is a really nice, serious drama about family, and what it means to be a mum or dad. It avoids almost every single cliché you could think of in connection with the topic. Still, it has the longest-ever build-up to a kiss in cinematic history! *lol* Well worth your time.

Great British Movie

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 4 July 2007 09:27

This movie is full of emotions. I think that everyone who sees it – would feel them. The main character of the movie is Frankie – 9 and half years old boy who is deaf – but that isn’t really that much important as he does have a great personality . You should see him writing the A in Deaf when one of his classmates tries to bring him down. Frankie miss his fatter terribly and writes to him often – only it is not his dad who writes back , but his mom – I don’t want to include any spoilers – so I would just highly recommend this movie to you. At first I was heaving a bit of trouble picking up the English accent , but in a few minutes got used to it – the movie did not have subtitles, which was fine by me as I generally don’t like movies with subtitles anyway ( with exception of anime movies – most of which are in Japanese as you know ). The moments which Frankie shared with his “ dad “ ( you will see for yourself why I am using the quotes here ) reminded me of my own dad – who is away now – and I am pretty much in the situation of Frankie – writing to him , only am using yahoo messenger – rather than mails. There were quite some moments in the movie I could relate to myself.

The music is well chosen as well and adds to the overall atmosphere – I do not know the reason but UK movies seems to be much better made than any else – on a psychological base if you want to call it that way. Like Billy Elliot, Dear Frankie would make you feel.

looked ok, but...

Posted : 17 years ago on 5 May 2007 01:46

this film looked interesting and decent and I wanted to watch it, but... it should be classified as a 'FOREIGN LANGUAGE' film! cripes, even though they spoke english, I could barely understand 1 out of 5 words!

And watching an english movie with subtitles is just so wrong. :)

therefore, I'm not rating it. Just warning people, you may need an interpreter for this one. Unless you come from UK. or grew up around people that always talked with their mouth full of food.
