Conan the Barbarian Reviews

While a little too long and a little too simplistic in the storytelling, there is a lot that makes Conan the Barbarian entertaining. It looks fabulous, with beautiful scenery, sets, costumes and cinematography, while the score is brilliant particularly in the first fifteen minutes. The dialogue is pretty good as is the direction, while the action sequences are top notch and the special effects decent. The pacing is brisk enough, while the acting I had little problem with. Arnold Schawarznegger is great as Conan, while James Earl Jones has fun as Thulsa Doom and Max Von Sydow is good value as King Osric. All in all, while no masterpiece Conan the Barbarian is very entertaining and worth watching at least once. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Por la segunda mitad del siglo XX, Lord of The Rings ha sido el mayor representante de fantasía hasta nuestros días. Desde su publicación varios han intentado derrocarle como el mejor del género, desde Shannara hasta La Rueda del Tiempo, desde Fionnavar hasta Elric de Melniboné, todos sin éxito. Muchos de ustedes creerán que esto involucra a la fantasía en general, pues no es cierto, hay multiples vertientes siendo la de Lord of The Rings la alta fantasía. Y por la primera mitad del siglo XX, el representante era otro, nada más ni menos que Conan el Bárbaro cargando la batuta de la espada y brujería y la fantasía heroica. Gracias a Conan tenemos a los juegos de rol que amamos, varios de los especímenes de fantasía posteriores, siendo el mayor representante al mismo nivel que el libro del anillo.

Ese es suficiente motivo para ver la versión hecha en los ochentas con Schwarzenegger (no me pregunten como le hice para escribir su nombre bien). Como adaptación no sigue al pie de la letra los eventos de los relatos de Robert E. Howards, cuyas tramas consistían en pequeñas anécdotas que formaban en su totalidad un espeso lore de multiples eras y naciones en guerra. La película se centró en darle un origen al bárbaro. La narrativa es por defecto no muy clara con su dirección, iniciamos con Conan en su juventud, la destrucción de su hogar y esclavitud por parte de la civilización, a ser un gladiador, a un aventurero y después busca conseguir retribución contra Thulsa Doom y sus esbirros los otros dos tercios de película. El escenario busca de manera continua expandirse por lo que no es un despropósito, del mismo modo vemos el crecimiento de Conan desde un niño indefenso a un mamadísimo guerrero capaz de dar pelea a los dioses. Por demás, sí, es muy aburrido ver esta secuencia tan lineal. Debió haberse hecho in-media-res enseñando material extra vía flashbacks en el momento más oportuno.

No importa tanto, el resto de la película es una auténtica fantasía de empoderamiento a la vieja escuela con una trama de venganza por medio para darle continuidad. Para este punto ya conocemos a Conan de arriba abajo y su relación con Thulsa Doom, por lo que podremos ver lo que deseamos: tener varios jefes con habilidades en combate y magia siendo derrotados por un gigante imparable. Parecerá que estoy describiendo a la genérica porno-venganza, aunque como Conan no es perfecto sus planes no resultan varias veces. La venganza de Conan se va complementando a otros personajes pintorescos a través de su curso, ayudando a hacer a Conan más divertido por la química. Por sí mismo él no es lo suficientemente interesante, carece de desarrollo o de introspección, es estático en la película. Metiendo compañeros y un interés amoroso ayuda a que este tenga alguien para que preocuparse fuera de sí mismo. Y como Thulsa Doom es hasta cierto punto un profeta filosofo su enfrentamiento se eleva a un grado mayor.

Como sigue el estilo narrativo y mitológico previo a Lord of The Rings, de alguna forma su escenario no es genérico en lo absoluto. Quizás no sepan esto, pero se podría hasta argumentar que Conan es más ciencia Ficción que fantasía convencional. Está en un mundo postapocalíptico luego de que varios eventos históricos azotaran el planeta creando varias tribus nacidas de los sobrevivientes. Aparte que esto está relacionado con su tema del barbarismo. Aquí les digo otra cosa que quizás nunca se les pasó por la mente, Conan El Bárbaro, considerada entre los entendidos como una de las fantasías de empoderamiento más evidentes de todos los tiempos, es en verdad un argumento con peso filosófico.

¿Se acuerdan de Nietzsche? Ese simpático loco que decía que Dios ha muerto (metafóricamente), pues mucha de su filosofía la puedes encontrar leyendo los libros o viendo la película. No tanto por la cita que le hacen en un inicio, sino por todo lo que representa. El enigma de acero, que no es más que una metáfora de voluntad, la oposición a la civilización vista como decadente y representada en Thulsa Doom, un mago corrupto y manipulador que esparce su culto a la serpiente para que le vean como un dios, como si de una perspectiva negativa al abrahamismo se tratase, lo de nunca rendirse y demostrar el carácter libre y masculino de los salvajes frente al represivo del escolar. Eso no es mera construcción de mundo por las puras. Y claro, no digo que Conan sea Stalker o una película de Bergman, sigue siendo un film palomitero, la exploración en sí es más motivacional que reflexiva. Al mismo tiempo no voy a desprestigiarle por no ir tan lejos, mejor es tener un mensaje claro que nada. El aspecto de Crom fue el punto de mayor valor ya que contrasta con la típica épica en que una deidad interviene, no señor, Conan hasta manda al cuerno a su propio dios si no le escucha y a actuar por mano propia es lo que le queda.  

Con todo ello, es una película muy divertida, con un genuino mensaje importante y con combates repletos de sangre y armaduras extravagantes. Los valores de producción están caducos, pero por su vibra ochentera y su practicidad son mejores que otras del género. La actuación de Schwarzenegger no es particularmente mala pese a su terrible acento, la de James Earl Jones fue excepcional en contraste. Los demás actores no fueron malos, Mako en particular fue muy bueno pese a sufrir los mismos problemas que Arnold. Pero no nos alejemos del plato fuerte que fue por lejos el soundtrack, Basil Paledouris es el segundo mejor compositor griego por detrás de Vangelis nada más.

Por demás, diría que para el año en que salió estaría en un top tres, encima de La Cosa, pero detrás de Blade Runner al menos por poco. Para el caso, es mejor que Excalibur del año pasado y toma su lugar como una de mis películas preferidas por al menos tener mejor pacing y una trama sin tanta mamada mesiánica. Viva la voluntad, abajo el destino mientras escuchamos los lamentos de las mujeres.

It takes something special to make you forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger is not a great actor and this movie is the first one to teach me that. It is also the first movie that I became obsessed with. God knows I ran that VHS copy ragged back in the day.

Though it's supposed to be an adaptation of the Robert E. Howard character, the movie is more in line with director John Milius' particular style and thus it stands out as its own thing. Normally deviations or changes from the source material can hurt a film if not properly applied but Milius' almost survivalist mentality really adds a unique flavor to the Cimmerian brute we know and love as Conan.

Some would say that his casting choices were superficial (he cast bodybuilders, surfers, and football players among others) as he chose people for their looks rather than worrying about their varying acting prowess. I say he opted to make a truly visual sword and sandal epic. The dialogue is minimal and the story unfolds on the strength of epic visuals and a rousing musical score instead. The results are epic, to say the least.

James Earl Jones as Darth Vader's voice? No thanks, I'll take him as Conan arch-nemesis Thulsa Doom, an ancient demi-god leading a snake cult and the source of Conan's lifetime strife. Arnold as the Terminator? Cool, but I'll take him as a warrior born out of circumstance and destined to be a king. Give me the growth of a hero, give me a love interest that changes his perception, give me wizard's that guide him on his path, give me an array of villains to keep him busy, and give me hours of adventure.

I absolutely love this movie. Attempts to make something akin to it have failed, sequels disappointed, and we've yet to have an adaptation of Conan that is 100% true to the Howard stories but make no mistake this is no space filler. Even if we had a great adaptation of the original source material, Milius' version will always stand on its own as spectacular.

When I was a kid, I used to love those Conan flicks. A couple of years ago, I watched again this first installment with Nick, my step-son, and even thought this time, the limited acting skills of Arnold Schwarzenegger was pretty obvious, I still thought it was really entertaining, even after all these years. Indeed, the mood was just really awesome, they managed to create a fascinating world and Schwarzenegger was basically born to play this character. Almost 30 years later, of course, they had to come up with a reboot and, to be honest, it could have been worse. Indeed, Jason Momoa did a decent job but the 2nd half was unfortunately really weak. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, for Schwarzenegger, it was a star-making performance and with ‘Predator’ and ‘The Terminator’, it has become rightfully one of his most iconic characters. Eventually, he would come back for the sequel ‘Conan the Destroyer’ which was rather poorly received but I thought it was not that bad. To conclude, this flick is a childhood favorite and, in spite of its flaws, I would go as far as saying that it is a fantasy classic. Anyway, it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Conan the Barbarian is one of Schwarzenegger's fun movies. Forget the big budget blockbusters and special-effects-tour-de-force-romps of the eighties and nineties. Along with `Pumping Iron,' his bodybuilding documentary, CTB represents the perfect showcase for Arnold's natural talents (including the self-confidence of ten action film stars, a commanding physical presence, and a whip smart sense of humour).
It does not hurt that Conan the Barbarian follows a predictable, albeit proven formula, the three classical unities of the kung-fu genre: wrong doing – the snake cult massacres Conan's family; rebirth – Conan learns the 'riddle of steel' during his years as a pit fighter; and revenge – Conan goes after the snake cult to avenge the killing of his parents. CTB also boasts several veterans of the screen, including Max Von Sydow and James Earl Jones, and a moving and powerful score by Basil Poledouris.

Conan the Barbarian is not restricted or relying upon dialogue or what is spoken between characters. Entire scenes that are central to the plot unfold without Conan even uttering a single line of dialogue. Take for instance the scene where Max Von Sydow charges Conan and his companions with the task of rescuing his daughter; the scene between Conan and Valeria where she tries to talk him out of accepting the rescue mission; the death of Valeria; and the climax where Conan confronts James Earl Jones. But every scene sells itself and Arnold's co-stars are able to fill the void left by Conan's respective,thoughtful silence. After all, Conan is a man of action, not a man of words.
Instead, Conan the Barbarian is about the unspoken bond between friends, lovers, and family. Arnold is able to convey with stares, smirks, and laughter what lesser actors and films do with rambling, awkward, unbelievable dialogue. Two shining examples of this, less is more approach, include the scenes where Conan cremates his lover and silences the King's daughter with a menacing look.
When Arnold does speak, his timing has never been better and his delivery never more convincing. Arnold seems completely at ease and comfortable in this role. He does not fumble over dialogue and corny one-liners. If Arnold were to make just one more movie, it should be the third installment in this series.

Arnold is certainly no Deniro or Spacey, but he is wildly charismatic and easier to understand as a person than either the complex Brando or manical Nicholson. Thus, while Conan the Barbarian never experienced much renowned attention or success, at least it has achieved cult-classic status, which is more than can be said for some dull, forgettable Oscar winners. Anyone who does not like this film simply will not allow themselves to. To Conan the Barbarian detractors, I say give it a chance and do not take it too seriously, Conan the Barbarian is abit of fun, romance, revenge and action all mixed into one fantastical story.
