Color of Night review

Posted : 3 years, 11 months ago on 12 June 2020 06:02

Here we have another Razzie Award-winning Bruce Willis flick, only this time it’s a neo-noir mystery called Color of Night, and it’s not a very good one. In this whodunit story, Dr. Bill Capa (Bruce Willis) is a color-blind psychiatrist who investigates the murder of his friend Dr. Bob Moore (Scott Bakula). The suspects include Sondra, the kleptomaniac and nymphomaniac (Lesley Ann Warren); Clark, the obsessive compulsive (Brad Douriff); Richie, a transgender boy (Jane Marsh); Rose, a mysterious woman who seduces Capa (also March); Buck, a suicidal ex-cop (Lance Henriksen) and Casey, a sadomasochist painter (Kevin J. O’Connor). Like most murder mysteries, the culprit is the minor character who is rarely seen throughout the majority, so the murderer was Dale (Andrew Lowery), but, there were some questions that needed to be addressed. First, if he wanted to keep Jane/Richie out of therapy, then why didn’t he just kill Dr. Capa similar to how he murdered Dr. Moore? Second, how did Dale know that Capa lived in the previous psychiatrist’s house, as he clearly must have known before planting the rattlesnake inside his mailbox? Third, what inspired him to purchase a Firebird, the same model vehicle that Buck owned? Fourth, why didn’t Dale, Jane, or Mrs. Niedelmeyer do anything to stop the father from abusing Richie? I could go on with the farfetched plot holes in the mystery, but instead I’m going to end with this. For a movie that’s about finding out who the killer is, Color of Night sure likes to forget certain details and over-elaborate on others.

(1 ½ Bruce Willies out of 5)

Color of Night review

One does not go into this film with any expectations after seeing the ridiculous trailer not to mention the pre-release bad word of mouth or the fact that the production nearly cost the director his life. The stress of finishing this production not to mention battling an NC-17 put this guy in the hospital after a severe heart attack. The editing and re-shoots were completed by an uncredited George P. Cosmatos (director of Tombstone and Rambo: First Blood Part II).

Color of Night follows Dr. Bill Capa who suffers from his own case of the blues after a patient of his kills themselves. Oh the story is so run of the mill even for the 90's and plays like a Cinemax late night softcore porn.

Watch for lame key scenes like Bruce Willis and Scott Bakula racing mountain bikes, Ruben Blades stereotypical L.A. Hispanic Cop, Willis' Capa opening the mailbox only to have a rattlesnake fly out at him, and a batch of crazies that are so over the top you'll think you're watching a comedy the likes of The Naked Gun.

Plus you'll be able to see the ending coming 10,000 miles away and hold on for a hilarious car chase sequence that is probably intended to be intense and thrilling.

In a nutshell, this whole film (produced by Willis' best friend and Jane March's husband) was the opportunity for him to show his dick on-screen. The sex scenes are so not erotic or sexy in any way especially when Jane March's Rose asks Capa what color her nipples are. Did I mention Capa is color blind when it comes to the "color" red? Whofffa! What a gem.

A very bad movie

Considering its terrible reputation, of course, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick. Still, I always had a weak spot for Bruce Willis and there was some rather morbid curiosity from my side which pushed me to check if it was indeed really that bad. Eventually, in my opinion, it was indeed easily Bruce Willis' worst movie I ever seen... I mean, he has made enough turkeys in his career but none of them were that bad. It is actually pretty funny to think that, if after watching 'The Sixth Sense', you might think that Bruce could play a believable psychiatrist, you should definitely check this piece of turd then. Seriously, I really don't know where to start... The directing was average (that's the understatement of the year...) , the acting was way over the top, the story was really ridiculous and even the title was really lame. The other weird thing is that Jane March became famous by starring in the erotic flick ‘L’Amant’ but claimed she dreaded the negative attention that she got by starring in this movie. I really wonder how she thought that starring in yet another erotic and dreadful thriller would improve her reputation in any way. Anyway, it is seriously a really bad flick and there is absolutely no reason to watch this, only maybe to see how bad this really is or maybe if you are dying to see Bruce Willis' butt. You have been warned.
