An average movie

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 31 October 2016 12:30

Even though this movie had a rather lousy reputation, since I always had a weak spot for Brian De Palmaโ€™s work, I still wanted to check it out. Basically, the whole thing was some kind of really misguided book adaptation and it was at the time a major critical and commercial flop. To be honest, I have to admit that I have never read the book itself but it was a massive best-seller and many argued that it was even one of the best books released in the 80โ€™s so there was definitely some great potential with this material. The main issue is that, since it was such a famous book, of course, the studio wanted to make some profit out of it but the problem was that the material was too dark and cynical for a mainstream feature so they tried to compromise but the end-result turned to be terribly underwhelming. Indeed, one of the most important aspect of this story was the fact that the main character was rather unlikable and they tried to tone it down with by casting one of the nicest guys in the business, Tom Hanks, who was was completely mistcast. Anyway, to conclude, even though it wasnโ€™t really awful, it was still pretty weak and I donโ€™t think it is really worth a look.ย

The Bonfire of the Vanities review

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 15 March 2015 06:14

What the heck was wrong with The Bonfire of the Vanities? To start with, everything about this flick doesn't feel right from the beginning to the casting of Tom Hanks as an unlikable Wall Street tycoon, as well as Bruce Willis as a journalist who was supposed to be British, plus the torturous production on how everything got made. Published by Tom Wolfe in 1987 and then turned into a major film in 1990, The Bonfire of the Vanities is an epically miscast, less sanitized adaptation that infamously bombed heavily at the box office and critics in general, marked the beginning of the end of some careers (Brian De Palma and Melanie Griffith), and spawned a best-selling book that details on why this film failed so hard called "The Devil's Candy". If you're a fan of De Palma, Hanks or Willis, The Bonfire of the Vanities will leave you feel empty and will get fans of Tom Wolfe's book all riled up on what the studio managed to do with the source material.
