Big Eyes review

A good movie

At last, after so many years of making some adaptations and remakes,  Tim Burton was finally releasing something slightly more original and it wasn't starring either Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter which can’t have been a coincidence. So, there was a decent buzz before its release but it didn’t make much waves when it was released after all. Still, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I thought it was a decent watch but not much more than that, I'm afraid. The main issue, I guess, is that it was a fairly entertaining story but it was nothing really amazing. I mean, it must have worked fine on paper, for a short story in the newspaper, but it was just not enough to fill up more than 100 minutes of running time. Eventually, I don't think you really get to know the characters after all and the whole thing was just too focused on telling us the facts. At least,  Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams did what they could with this material and they managed to deliver some solid performances but all the supporting characters going from the daughter, the best friend, the competing gallery owner, the art critic or the reporter showing up at random were all barely developed. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still not bad and I think it is worth a look, but it was still nothing really amazing coming from Burton.

An excellent film, compact storytelling with an appropriate dose of Burton-esqe flair (Amy Adams starts to see those big eyes in her mind) which supports and does not detract from the story or character. Add in colorful shots of San Francisco and landscape and you've got a true art film which also has the fascinating angle of being based on a true story!

The few scenes with Tim Burton (TB) influence are very Burton-esque. But I felt it still lacked somehow in TB influence, it could have been much more, yet it was slightly dull without more TB. Nonetheless quite an entertaining, funny, enjoyable film with the ideal cast.

I have to say I really was interested in this for Christoph Waltz and to see how this followed the Tim Burton style of film-making. The acting was pretty good and it had some pretty great one liners. The costume design and the sets had the look and feel of a Tim Burton film. The only weirdness that made it feel like something Tim Burton did was when she saw other people with big eyes. The ending kind of seemed like either something I have seen before or I am somewhat familiar with the court case involved in the story. It's interesting to see Tim Burton work with a new slate of actors and he utilizes them quite well. Also the music is made by Danny Elfman as usual and it's still pretty good. Although it's not his best efforts. It's a truly intriguing story and I recommend checking it out.
