Bicentennial Man review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 29 March 2022 11:40

As much as I don't like to sound opinionated, I personally don't understand the hate this movie gets. Sure Bicentennial Man isn't the best movie ever but it is a great and underrated movie that is unfairly dismissed for being overly-sentimental and cloying. Some of it can be slow, but a lot compensates for any misgivings. Bicentennial Man is beautifully filmed, with lovely cinematography and scenery, while the score is gorgeous. I also loved the end credits song, and Celine Dion couldn't have been the more perfect choice to sing it. The script does have a lot of touching moments but it also has humour as well, and good humour at that. The story about life and the human condition is sweet and engaging and the film is competently directed. I really liked the characters, especially the title character who is incredibly endearing. The acting was great, Robin Williams is wonderful and he is solidly supported by Embeth Davidtz, Oliver Platt and Sam Neill. All in all, this is a very good movie. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Rules for Robotics

Posted : 11 years, 12 months ago on 19 May 2012 03:08

The first Rule of Robotics is:

You ain't got no human parts.

The second Rule of Robotics is:

Youse made, all of metal, and shit.

The third Rule of Robotics is:

You a hard-boiled egg, man.

Yeah....I think I just removed myself from the Isaac Asimov Fan Club's mailing list.

Sry. ;)

I'm also starting to guess that I hate this director: I've seen three of his movies...and, well, I wish I hadn't, basically.

And, you know, I like Robin Williams and Sam Neill, to a certain extent, but God knows they've been in their share of flunks and flops, y'know?

As much as it might have enraged me, once upon a time, to have admitted it.

And, you know, some stories really do come true, but the one about the Robotic Methuselah of the "Golden Age" is really one that needs to take a nap.....forever.

No more Golden robots, no more Golden Methuselah.

"Next!"

(Because, after all, who needs to be golden-white when you can be, uh, fleshy pink, or, uh...whatever. "Sometimes white, and sometimes red".....remember?)

P.S. And was this seriously made the same year as "Galaxy Quest"? I think that one was looking back, and the other was looking ahead....

(6/10)

An average movie

Posted : 12 years ago on 25 April 2012 09:47

Even though the reviews concerning this movie were not really positive, I was still curious about it. Basically, it is one of the most ambitious projects with Robin Williams and for this feature, he is working again with Chris Columbus. Together, they had some tremendous success with 'Mrs. Doubtfire' 6 years before and they probably hoped they would make another hit. Unfortunately, it was a flop. Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad. First of all, you have a decent cast (Robin Williams, Embeth Davidtz, Sam Neill, Oliver Platt) and an interesting story which was really similar to 'Artificial Intelligence: AI'. Unfortunately, like many other Williams flicks, the whole thing was way too sentimental. That's one the main issues with Robin Williams is that he is usually either really hysterical or over-sentimental in his movies, there is no middle-ground. It's too bad because the whole thing had some potentiald and Isaac Asimov's work deserved a better movie than this. Still, it was interesting to see Robin Williams trying some SF and the whole thing is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

I may be the only one who actually liked this film. I felt for him and shed a few tears definitely one I'd like to add to my collection.

Nothing to Lose and Still Lost

Posted : 16 years, 5 months ago on 16 December 2007 07:25

I watched this on a cold, rainy Saturday night and there was nothing on tv. So I had nothing to lose. Except that my head was filled with garbage. It's the story of a robot who had some sort of wiring configuration that made him special. He's sold to a family who eventually realize he's special. But Pinocchio wants to be a real boy. And for two hours you are subjected to drivel. Robin Williams as a robot is a horrible choice. He's way to human, and that's his specialty. Why not use somebody else. It's a marvelous cast wasted on a film that doesn't work.
