"Critics thought that there are carnival fun houses, more scarier than this movie. My thoughts? It’s better than the sequel, but the 3-D effects couldn’t save the film. But at least it has Meg Ryan, in her first role in the film."
"Plot: A skeptical journalist buys the Amityville house after busting paranormal charlatans using it for profit but the entity soon begins to make its influence known. Though it shows the much needed restraint that part two didn't have, boasts better acting (mostly), shows some interest in continuity (however weak), and starts off well enough, the movie doesn't take long to hurtle listlessly toward the dumps. Based on events unrelated to the location, the results seem awkwardly patched together"
