With all of the buzz I figured this would maybe hit my top 10 but I'm always let down by buzz. However, Up in the Air is a delight to watch. Clooney smothers you with charm and every unlikable character is likable. It also doesn't follow the typical hollywood formula. Or perhaps I loved it so much because Clooney's character is totally me, in essence.

District 9 (2009)
District 9 was one of those films that got bzuz because it was such a "cheap" film. It's easily one of the best films of the year. A very human portrayal of a man trying to look "cool" who realizes that there's more to life than that.

Avatar (2009)
I knew two things about Avatar before seeing it. It involved blue aliens and was in 3D. It's film that draws you in. The typical hoorah BS is there but it has this love to it, in more than one sense and it's just a thrill ride.
What is lacks is originality in it's plot and characters but it makes up for that with some of the best 3D. It doesn't pop at you, instead it just draws you into the film, as if you're a part of it.

The Boat That Rocked (2009)
Out of nowhere popped this movie. I watched it and just loved the way it was acted, film and the story is one I knew nothing about. It's a shame it didn't get more attention.

Star Trek (2009)
BAM. The reboot that saved the summer blockbusters. The only film to eb worth the $$$ during the hottest time of the year. It's fun, action packed and brings back the series to a whole new level. Reboot indeed

Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
I don't really remember the book but Spike Jones captures a childs mindset as we venture from the real world to this magical place inside his head. Visually stunning and with such an abstract yet fitting soundtrack.
chrisranson's rating:

My Bloody Valentine (2009)
A horror film in the top 10? I know, but seriously this film was badass. The 3D really added to it. One of the best nudes scenes ever shot for a horror film. Awesome kills and enough little changes to keep fans of the original guessing.

Paper Heart (2009)
I got this film confused with "500 Days of Summer" so imagine my sadness when I was watching that instead of this. Such a cute yet fun little movie.
chrisranson's rating:

Halloween II (2009)
The first Halloween remake did so much wrong and yet did a lot right. To remake a sequel is a tough job and it's clear that Zombie wanted no part in this. But guess what, his off the wall take of the downward spiral of Michale and Laurie's true to life reaction to the first film is almost hauntingly natural.
chrisranson's rating:

Zombieland (2009)
WTF a third horror film in my top 10? There was another after this but then I saw Avatar. It was clearly the year for horror films. Zombieland takes the now tired zombie genre and makes it into one of the funniest movies of the year. It also has one of the best unexpected cameos out there.
chrisranson's rating:

I've seen most of the major films of the year. However, Up in the Air hasn't been viewed and it's likely to hit my top 10.
