My coastal birthplace Swansea is second city of Wales, with the Gower peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty, close by.

Swansea was badly damaged during world war 2, and the city centre is not the most beautiful, but it has the lovely stretch of Swansea bay, fine parks and gardens, Plantasia (tropical wildlife as well as flora), modern marina and maritime quarter, and a well known market with laverbread (seaweed often eaten at breakfast) and cockles among the specialities. I'm looking forward to visiting the renovated Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, with many works by Evan Walters, one of my favourite Welsh artists.

Poet Dylan Thomas was born round the corner from me. Also from Swansea: John Charles the great footballer, Rowan Williams the former archbishop of Canterbury, and William Grove who created the first fuel cell. Catherine Zeta Jones is from Mumbles, a popular resort along the coast, with 2 of my favourite seaside restaurants. Swansea-Mumbles was the world's first passenger railway. Swansea is among the better Premier League football Clubs, with a friendly reputation, and top class rugby is also played in the city. It was at Swansea that cricketer Gary Sobers was first to hit six sixes in an over.

Gower is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, wild horses can be seen at Llanrhidian marshes especially, and there are several evocative ruined castles overlooking the sea.
