Anatomy of a Fall (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Winner of the Palm d'Or. Female director, high IMDb rating, and good 'dark horse' option.
The Bikeriders (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: I feel director Jeff Nichols is due for a nomination. He has been recognized in so many other places, but the Oscars have eluded him. Throw in an Oscar-loving cast and crew and a very American story, you've got a strong contender.
The Holdovers (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Director Alexander Payne re-teaming with Paul Giamatti (Sideways), it's a very American movie with a story that can bring out a lot of drama and humor.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Scorsese and DiCaprio... and DeNiro? A true story pulled out of American history? Shoo-In
Stehako's rating:

Maestro (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Bradley Cooper's follow-up to Oscars-loving "A Star is Born". An Oscar-loving cast, and a true story of an American artist.
Next Goal Wins (2023)
Reasons for Prediction:. The Oscar voters paid attention to director Taika Waititi's "JoJo Rabbit" so I think they will with this one, too, which seems like the perfect feel-good movie to be put in the mix. Plus, Michael Fassbender.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Reasons for Prediction:. Nolan has another very well-reviewed box-office hit, and this one is a true story about America and why the U.S. is great and horrible at the same time.
Stehako's rating:

Past Lives (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Very well-received so far. It's also helmed by a first-time female director and solid non-American addition to the nominees.
Poor Things (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Director Yorgos Lanthimos' follow-up to the Best Picture winner, "The Favourite". Emma stone in the lead. Based on the posters it will be artistic and weird and likely nearly brilliant.
Stehako's rating:

Rustin (2023)
Reasons for Prediction: Main character is a civil rights leader and gay in the 1960s. It seems like a true American story that will get the voters' attention and it's possibly a feel-good pick that may be needed.

These are predictions for BEST PICTURE only
This year should be a little bit easier to predict, as there are fewer films postponed (still happening, like with the Dune sequel) but it still feels like spinning a roulette wheel. Choosing films based on directors or actors is less reliable, even choosing movies based on current social issues/topics hasn't proved to be reliable choices in recent years. Finally, no longer are 'prestige' films a given. Still, it's fun to choose so early on and see what happens over the next several months...
