Great Day (1930)
Unfinished and unreleased musical adapted from a rather unsuccessful 1929 Broadway show of the same name. Its soundtrack however was very popular and that may have inspired MGM to buy up the film rights. Production began in the Fall of 1930 and was abandoned after only a couple of weeks reportedly due to script problems. A subsequent attempt in 1934 to produce it as a starring vehicle for Jeanette MacDonald also went nowhere.

During the first half of the 1930's, MGM continued their reputation of quality and prestige with their annual slates of films. The studio's leading ladies of the 20's: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer continued to maintain their stardom throughout the new decade and gave the studio one acclaimed success after another. Leading men John Gilbert, Ramon Novarro and William Haines unfortunately saw their formerly A-list careers suffer a steep decline but a new male box office star would emerge: Clark Gable, the eventual "King of Hollywood" who would begin his long and very profitable association with MGM during this time. The Barrymores, Jackie Cooper, Jean Harlow, Jimmy Durante, Lewis Stone, Marie Dressler, Myrna Loy, Robert Montgomery, Wallace Beery and William Powell were among the many others who ranked among the studio's biggest stars in this era.
Part 2 of my comprehensive salute to MGM presents a complete chronological filmography of all feature films that the studio produced or distributed during the first half of the 1930's. As this collection of their output shows, MGM placed a bit more emphasis on comedies and dramas at first but as the decade progressed, they would eventually increase production of the genre that would become perhaps their greatest box office niche: the musical. Once again, numerous movies that would rank among the decade's very best are included in this listing.
