Glamour Portraits 1925-1992'

Veronica Lake
George Hurrell's photography captured the glamour of Hollywood's golden age in the '30s and '40s. An anthology of his work -- along with a biography of the artist -- will appear in Mark A. Vieira's coffee table book "George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992," released by Running Press. Hurrell, who is credited with creating the glamour shot, photographed Hollywood's most important figures during a career that spanned decades. In this 1941 photograph, Veronica Lake poses seductively on a settee in a shimmery gown. See more of the glamorous photos ...

Norma Shearer
In this 1934 photo, Norma Shearer assumes a coy pose with her hair in neat curls and her body partially concealed by a vase. It is a slight departure from the sexy, sumptuous shots that define his body of work.
Norma Shearer
Norma Shearer was one of Hurrell's great muses. The actress sought out Hurrell for some photographs after seeing shots he had taken of her friend, the actor Ramon Novarro. During this shoot in 1929, Hurrell repeatedly played the song "When My Baby Smiles at Me" to set the mood. "She ribbed me for years about it," said Hurrell.

Marelene Dietrich
Marlene Dietrich made Hurrell keep a full-length mirror on set during her photo shoots so she could pose herself. The German-American actress appears in this 1937 photograph, taken in Hurrell's signature style that uses warm light to highlight a subject.

Mae West
Mae West sat for this photo in 1933, shortly after her first lead in the film "She Done Him Wrong."

Lili Damita
Hurrell photographed Lili Damita in 1930. His work was rediscovered by young collectors in the 1970s, aided by press from a Whitney Stine book called "The Hurrell Style." He photographed Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross and Sharon Stone, the latter of whom wrote the introduction for Vieria's book.
Joan Crawford and Clark Gable
This 1936 photograph of Joan Crawford and Clark Cable was a promotional from "Love on the Run."

Joan Crawford
George Hurrell photographed Joan Crawford for her role in "Dancing Lady" in 1933. She wears a sexy sheer gown on some steps from a film set. Hurrell liked to use stage props in his photos.
Joan Crawford
Hurrell shot all the major stars at MGM. Joan Crawford, one of the studio's leading ladies, became another muse of Hurrell's. He shot 33 portrait sessions with her. "I photographed Crawford literally thousands of times," Hurrell said.
Jean Harlow
Mark A. Vieria's book "George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992" will be released on Nov. 12, 2013. The sumptuous book is both a biography and a trove of the artist's work.
Jane Russell
Hurrell took this portrait of Jane Russell to help her promote her 1943 film "The Outlaw." George Hurrell worked intermittently in the 1950s, but struggled to find the constant stream of high-paying gigs that brought him to fame a few decades earlier.
Humphrey Bogart
Hurrell's portraits of Humphrey Bogart are credited with helping create the actor's brooding image.

Greta Garbo
Hurrell photographed Greta Garbo in 1930, on the set of Clarence Brown's "Romance."

Bette Davis
Hurrell moved to Warner Bros., where he took numerous photos of star Bette Davis. "Bette Davis was the queen at we all knew it," recalled a Warner Bros. hairdresser. "She made the money, not the brothers."
Joan Crawford
"Each sitting was a new experience for both of us," Hurrell said of working with Joan Crawford. "She constantly altered her appearance, the color of her hair, eye makeup, eyebrows, mouth."
