The L Word (2004)
Character: Jenny
Reason: Not only do I want to punch Jenny, but I want to stab her and feed her to manatees. Not so alluring now, are they?
Jenny is possibly one of the worst written characters with similarly written story-arcs I have ever witnessed. It seems like the creators tried to make her the focal character, but her bullshitery just causes her to ruin EVERYTHING good about the show. The fact that in the last season they paired her up with Shane just made me want to vomit a little. In fact, practically the only good thing about the 6th season was that they killed Jenny off, but they took the satisfaction of even that away from me because after her death in the first episode, they showed what came BEFORE her death.
I feel reassured by the fact that I'm not the only person who feels this way about Jenny. The "I killed Jenny" merchandise is apparently rather popular.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles (2008)
Character: Tess (book version)
Reason: Whinge whinge whiiiiiiiiiiine..... That's basically how Tess's life goes in the book.
Mistress Pamela (1974)
Character: Pamela (book version)
Reason: You are a 15/16 year old girl. You work as a servant in a house of a lady. She dies, her son takes over as lord of the house. He repeatedly tries to rape you. What do you do? You do what your parents tell you and go home to them. You do not stay at the house, continue to be harassed, until finally the lord kidnaps you, keeps you in his other house and doesn't let you contact anyone, and keeps trying to have his way with you, do you? Thought not. It's all right though, they get married in the end... Wait, what?!
I kind of want to see this film version now, just to see how bad it is.
It isn't very often that I come across a fictional character that actually makes me want to decapitate small furry animals so I can use their entrails as a makeshift projectile to throw at them, but they do exist. Usually they are the result of poor writing, and generally manage to drag the whole thing down with them.
Work in Progress - Will be adding to this one as I think of/find them.
