Season 1 Review

While it could at times favor sensationalism and buzz-topics over natural storytelling, the first season of 13 Reasons Why was often a genuine and affecting look at teenage life and grieving. This is mostly do to the direction and acting; Langford and Minnette make for a pair of compelling leads, and much of the season's emotional impact results from their work. The rest of the cast does some strong work as well. The scripts were more unfocused than needed, and could've used more clarity and more character moments instead favor forward plot movement.

That's not to say that the movement is that fluid. 13 episodes were about two or three too many; many side plots could've been dropped (episode "Tape 5, Side B" could've been excised entirely") and/or expedited. The season finale was also something of a missed opportunity; it leaves to many balls hanging in the air when what it needed was resolution. There'll be a second season, so many of these threads could be cleared up, but a complete story would've been preferable to drawing already thin stories out.

Best Episode: "Tape 6, Side A"
While "Tape 3, Side A" had a few of the series best scenes, the catharsis of "Tape 6, Side A" was more important to the story. After waiting the whole season for Clay's tape, the show doesn't disappoint with the most emotional episode of the series. The pain and regret of the episode register so powerfully that I was willing to forgive the other episodes' missteps. Had the season (hell, even series) ended after this episode, it would've been the perfect capper and would've likely notched my overall grade up by a letter. It's the best written, directed and acted of the bunch.

Weakest Episode: "Tape 5, Side B"
As I already mention, this was the episode that felt the most expendable. It was padding so the season could hit 13 episodes. Very little of this episode makes much of an impact on the overall story.

Season Grade: B+

Season 2 Review

Season 2 of Supergirl essentially hit the same notes as the first; unfettered optimism, unsubtle feminism and fun/jumbled storytelling. It's still a bit of a mixed bag, but the highs were higher this time around. The cast is still solid, though most had little to do this season; the Mon-El storyline dominated the season and, while Chris Wood was exceptionally charming as the character and played nicely off Benoist, it took away from most of the show's side characters (Jimmy Olsen is almost completely side-lined). Like I said, however, the show is often quite fun, and can often moves so fast that you really don't notice the problems until the story is over.

Best Episode: "Resist"
Most superhero series episodes run together, but Supergirl's beginning and end episodes were the best executed. "Resist" narrowly beats out the season-premiere, largely because it's more consequential and is one of the more tightly made of the series. Plus, it was one of the few S2 episodes to properly utilize it's ensemble, and Cat Grant's return was quite the breath of fresh air.

Weakest Episode: ABSTAIN (though the Mon-El heavy episodes really didn't pop).

Season Grade: B-

Season 1, Part 2 Review

The first half of The Get Down's first season was fun, but largely felt unfocused and scattershot. The second half, however, tightened the storytelling and still delivered the musical spectacle that made the series enjoyable in the first place. The music, the visuals, the characters; almost everything popped in this half. The only thing that I wasn't really fond of was the excessive use of animation (obviously inserted because Jaden Smith was likely unavailable for reshoots), they just took me out of the story. Otherwise, this was an exciting batch of episodes that make it both fitting, and a damn shame, that the series won't be getting a second season. The narrative it felt complete, but it teased enough to leave the viewer wanting more.

Best Episode: "Only from Exile Can We Come Home"
Jam-packed with everything that made the series a blast, including possibly the show's finest musical performance, and still found time for character moments. It was both exhilarating and melancholy; hell, even done right depressing at times (especially considering Shaolin's fate). It was also a reasonably fitting finale, with most every character getting a send-off. "See you on the other side", indeed.

Weakest Episode: "Gamble Everything"
"Gamble Everything" indulged in the show's worst ticks, and felt the most like it was spinning its wheels of the final five episodes. Not terrible, but nowhere near as good as the other four. Also, that MC was just way too annoying.

Season 3 Review

The Flash's third season was just a murky mess of a season. While the second season wasn't great, it at least started by retaining enough of the first's charm. S3 is pretty much a mess from the beginning. The problem's started with the "Flashpoint" setup, further muddying the series timeline. Time-travel has killed a lot of the series momentum, and it'll need to be tampered down extensively if the show ever wants to get back to the joy of season one. The character of Barry Allen will also need to be effectively retconned; so many of the season's problems were the result of the character's mistakes, both willful and deliberate. Even worse, his constant sulking sunk so much of the show's fun. It was still fun at times, but very little ever came together satisfyingly, especially since the season's overall plot was nothing but a limp rehash of the past two.

Best Episode: "Duet"
The musical episode, Supergirl-crossover, managed to get the show out of it's funk, even if it was only for an episode. It was simply a fun little story that was executed effectively.

Weakest Episode: ABSTAIN (Though the Savitar-heavy episodes brought little to the table).

Season 1 Review

It was charming throughout it's first season, but Great News hasn't really hit that comedy sweet spot just yet. It got stronger throughout the season, but could still use some room to grow. The cast shined though; with Heelan and Martin making for wonderful leads, and John Michael Higgins providing a lot of support. So, while never truly reaching greatness, it was still a great deal of fun.

Best Episode: "The Red Door"
It's the most consistently funny episode of the bunch, with a finale that was one of the funniest of the year.

Weakest Episode: "War Is Hell"
The baggiest and most traditionally "sitcom-y" of the bunch. Not a bad episode, but a rather disappointing one.

Season 1 Review

Had Designated Surivivor been able to hold on to the momentum it had for its first half, then it would've been a much more entertaining experience. Alas, it did not; the second half is something of a dull slog that doesn't really know what it wants to be. Does it want to be the 24/West Wing hybrid that the first half presented, or does it just want to be a dull retread of the latter? Often, it was the retread. The first half, while by no means perfect, had enough energy I was willing to look past the series' narrative shortcomings and just enjoy the ride.

Best Episode: "The End Of The Beginning"
The title is more of a warning for potential viewers in hindsight; after this is where the show starts taking a tumble. While there are still a few good ones in the immediate aftermath, this is the last episode where everything really came together in a satisfying way. The action, the suspense, the storytelling; it all works here.

Weakest Episode: "Brace For Impact"
A bland season finale leads to uncertainty regarding viewership of another season. The story isn't wrapped up well, and too much is left dangling towards next year. I don't need complete closure in a season finale, but I want a reason to come back next season.

Season 5 Review

After disappointing seasons three and four, Arrow's fifth season was a genuinely strong season that often recalled the series' season two heights. While not quite reaching that season's overall quality, it did remind viewers why they started watching in the first place; street level action. Getting rid of the mystical aspects that brought the series down, season five focused on "realistic" (not really, but semi-plausible) action and character-driven storytelling. Hell, even the flashbacks kinda worked. They were distracting at times, but they weren't as incomprehensible as the past two seasons. After sitting a few years out, Arrow returned to the top of the DC TV pack.

Best Episode: "Lian Yu"
Literally blowing everything up, "Lian Yu" felt like a series finale. Hell, with a more clear ending, it certainly could've operated as one. It genuinely felt like an episode that had been building since the first episode. It closes out the season's arc, the flashbacks, and leaves us wanting more for next year. It was one of the show's best.

Weakest Episode: "Spectre Of The Gun"
"Issue" episodes of shows can work, sometimes extremely well, but, while it handles it okay, "Spectre of the Gun" seemed to much like an "every side gets a say" type of issue episode, instead of full-blooded examination of gun violence. It's an okay episode, but one that is very much forgotten as the season moves away from it.
