Abraham Valley (1993), a long, elegant, languorous masterpiece by the late great Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, based on a Portuguese version of Madame Bovary, and starring his muse, the beautiful Leonor Silveira. Set in the Douro valley, this film, above all, led me to up sticks and head for North Portugal. Oliveira made it when only 84; he made numerous more films up to his death in 2015, aged 106.
