2016 Best Picture Nominees Predictions

Sort by: Showing 13 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
People who added this item 1800 Average listal rating (1220 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 7.3
Why

The Academy was not well liked for leaving the first film out of the running, and it is possible they might want to placate those fans.

Detractions

The odds of that happening are really low, and there wasn't any real backlash for leaving it out. Also, it's a superhero film, which is a genre that has yet to be nominated (*cough* The Dark Knight *cough*). And no, Birdman does not count.

Post Release Thoughts

Upcoming.

Why

Director, Stephen Spielberg. A script co-written by the Coen Brothers. Tom Hanks in the lead role. A period piece about war. All of these seem like a recipe for a Best Picture nomination.

Detractions

Not much. The only thing left to worry about is how well received the final product is.

Chappie (2015)
Why

The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp, who showed himself to be a capable director with the previously nominated "District 9", so it's not exactly a stretch that the Oscars might recognize his work again.

Detractions

Unfortunately, his previous work "Elysium" was nowhere near as beloved as "District 9." That could spell trouble for this film if Blomkamp was just able to produce some lightning in a bottle. Also, Science Fiction is already a very difficult film to make the list.

Post Release Thoughts

The reviews are pretty negative. It doesn't have a prayer.

Why

Quentin Tarantino is directing and writing, which is more than enough reason to consider it.

Detractions

The script leakage from last year could wind up affecting the expectations of the final product.

Inside Out (2015)
Why

Pixar has usually been able to break the mold and get their films nominated for Best Picture.

Detractions

However, Pixar has been in kind of a slump, so who knows how well received this will be. Also animation is hard to get nominated in the first place.

Why

A based on a true story, period piece directed by Ron Howard, that was actually the inspiration for a classic piece of literature.

Detractions

Films that have impressive visual effects, and have an epic scope, have generally been ignored in recent years, (though there are exceptions).

Joy (2015)
Why

It's directed by David O. Russell, and it stars his veteran stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

Detractions

David O. Russell is bound to make a dud at some point, and this could be it.

Paddington (2014)
Why

It's an adaptation of a beloved children's book, and the buzz is not only positive, but very strong.

Detractions

Many. It's a family film, it was released all the way back in January, it is nowhere close to being a typical Oscar film.

Post Release Thoughts

The reviews have been glowing, with people saying it does the books justice, while being great and charming in its own right. Unfortunately, the above detractions still stand.

The Revenant (2015)
Why

The film is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who just got showered with love by the Academy for his work in "Birdman," so it is more than likely that this film will be very high on their watch list.

Detractions

The Academy usually does not like to honor the same people two years in a row, which could wind up hurting its chances.

Why

The original Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture, and they still haven't lived down not nominating "The Empire Strikes Back," which could most definitely make them at least considering it as a possibility.

Detractions

They do not like recognizing franchises, and since Star Wars is so big, they might pass on it, because they usually prefer smaller and more down to earth films. Also, who knows how well received this will be, just look at the prequels.

The Walk (2015)
Why

It's based on a true story. There was a documentary about the incident that won an Oscar years before. It's directed by Robert Zemeckis. The premise leads itself to some nail-biting sequences.

Detractions

Robert Zemeckis has been in something of a slump for a while. The film is also in 3D, which could hurt his chances (though that's admittedly slim considering the previous nominations in recent years, but I'm grasping for straws here.)
