A Prophet (2009)

This excellent gangster drama takes place mostly in a French prison. The characters are unforgettable and the directing maintains a consistently high level of intensity.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)

One of the most intense thrillers of a year that was full of them! The amazing characters - mostly the iconic Lisbeth Salander - outshine the overly complicated mystery plot, and make the film sail along smoothly, despite itself.

A sci-fi opus that questions the morals of new technology and even what it means to be human. What an interesting debut film from Duncan Jones.

Mother (2009)

Korea pumps out amazingly dark dramas much like Hollywood pumps out crappy 80s remakes! Mother has all the elements of the better Korean films, like a murder mystery, incompetent cops (are they that stupid over there?), violent thugs, etc. You just can't go wrong these days with Korean imports!

The Secret in Their Eyes

The murder mystery thriller dominates the 2009 list, and this Oscar winner was yet another worthy interpretation. Like in Dragon Tattoo, the unsolved crime took place several decades before the film takes place, and there are just as many surprise twists throughout this film. The only weakness is that there is no character as memorable as a Lisbeth Salander.

Star Trek (2009)

Before this film, remakes and reboots were considered a dumb and pointless waste of time by anyone other than Hollywood studio executives. This version of Star Trek managed to stay entertaining by keeping far away from rehashing old material. A lesson already forgotten by the 2012 Spiderman almost shot-for-shot remake.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

This quirky story about animals and their hijinks was perfectly handled by the King of Quirky, Wes Anderson. Oddly enough this is Clooney's best heist movie ever, apologies to the Oceans franchise.

Black Dynamite (2009) (2009)

"Yeah yeah, mama. Now you could hit the sheets or the streets, it don't make me no never mind. Now that's your bag baby, you can go, or you could come. Can you dig it?" Most quotable movie of the year.

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.

I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
