Now that rap was blowing up it had every reason to celebrate, but it also had to be weary. You can blow up but watch out or you'll pop. And 1990 saw the first trial in the forms of Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer eclipsing the public eye, as well as the undeniable New Jack Swing hand of corruption, a force so powerful it took down titans like Big Daddy Kane. Rap had to really fight for it's integrity for the first time. But this wasn't no 97', Rap was still fresh and mighty enough to persevere against these foes and came out the other end the triumphant one, as all three, New Jack, Hammer, and Vanilla faded. And in spite of the struggle this turned out to be a great year regardless, especially for the polar opposite of pop rap, political rap made this it's best year.
