Saw: The Final Chapter (2010)
As a movie goer as well as avid horror fan no one takes more exception to the beaten horse corpse that is the Saw franchise like I do. Being the seventh instalment in the series the very least they could do is tie up the loose ends in the story and give us more blood and carnage than any of its predecessors... and holy shit did it ever. Aside from the 1st film its the only one worth watching in the series unfortunately for it to make a lick of sense you must subject yourself to the 5 films that came before it... Also without the aid of 3D special effects.
The Final Destination (2009)
Something most people don't know is that the original Final Destination was actually a re write of a rejected x files episode. I bet fox is rather surprised to see how much success the idea has garnered. These films are surprisingly solid for all basically being based off the same idea. Death wants you and your sexy teenage friends, You have a vision that causes you and your friends to cheat death, death spends the next 90 minutes exacting revenge on each of your asses one by one by one. 3D was again just a natural direction for these films to go in. Aside from having some of the most creative deaths seen so far in the franchise the effects are amazing. What better use of 3D could there be?
Coraline (2009)
Here's a cool idea. Lets make a creepy ass clay animation movie that involves alternate dimensions, buttons for eyes, ghosts of murdered children and some weird ass spider lady.. Oh yeah and to make sure the nightmares last lets make it all pop out of the fucking screen!
My Bloody Valentine (2009)
This is one of those rare cases where the remake is actually better than the original... Sorry people but it is. Give me one argument to the contrary other than "it's not the original". They took all of the potentially scary things from the first and made them actually somewhat nerve rattling. There was limited use of 3D in this but it was very effective. Despite how most will remember it I clearly recall bros gasping and/or yelling out during the freaky parts. in the theatre. Calm down boys its only a movie.
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Remember that part where you think all the toys are going to get burned?? Then it all just turned out to be some sick build up to a claw joke. What twisted bastard at Disney thought that would be funny? Tres gauche..
Piranha 3D (2010)
This is pretty much the best they could have done with a movie about killer fish. All of the 3D effects were done very well. A lot of people thought this movie was cheesy, lame, stupid... To those people I say you just don't get the joke and this isn't your kind of movie. Unlike my bloody valentine the original is for sure worth checking out if your a die hard horror fan. A fun fact the original Piranha 2 was James Cameron's directorial debut
I had mixed feelings about this movie itself. However it was pretty ground breaking in terms of how it was made. It's probably the best example on this list of a decent modern 3D movie.
Up (2009)
This is maybe the best effort ever put in by Disney Pixar. It's story has a lot of depth for a children's film..sorry "family film". It is truly one of the rare examples of a movie that will make you both laugh and cry more than once before the end credits roll. Use of 3D was yet again just a logical move on their part. Visuals are stunning and it's 3D wasn't overdone. It's not often I would say a movie gets a 10/10 but this one does. It lives up to everything a movie like it is supposed to.
This movie kind of plays out like a child friendly family guy cutaway.. Its best described as well silliness. Honestly though it's the best kind of silliness. It's one of those movies you can tell came entirely out of the fact that 3D was having a second win. Giant meatballs and other random food and beverage flying across and out of the screen. It does something most children's films have a hard time doing. It will entertain the baby the toddler the 10 year old as well as the parentals. . It's stupid but harmless..
Jackass 3 (2010)
When I heard this was being done in 3D I must admit I let out an annoyed sigh. But upon going to see it I was very impressed. Use of 3D unlike many movies was not just an afterthought you can tell that many of the shots and scenes were conceived with 3D in mind. Awesome thing about jackass is that it never really changed the third movie is jut as funny as the first. If you think about t as silly as the initial concept behind it is.. They only have made these movies better each time.
Every other movie released right now is "in 3D". Some designed from inception to take full advantage of this rebooted technology and most with the 3D added as a money grabbing after thought. It's safe to say not all are great. It's hit and miss. This is in my opinion the list of the 10 best 3D films.
