James R. Webb was an American screenwriter. He is best known for writing the screenplay for the critically acclaimed Western epic "How the West Was Won" (1962), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Webb also served as an officer in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the II Corps during the invasion of North Africa in 1942.
