He was a professional pianist at 14, later leading his own orchestra on a tour of the Orient. He was a member of the Paul Whiteman Rhythm Boys with Bing Crosby and Al Rinker. He was the first American entertainer in the CBI Theatre of War in 1943-1944. Joining ASCAP in 1931, his chief musical collaborators included Bing Crosby, Clifford Gordon, Mort Greene, Gus Arnheim, Ralph Freed, James Cavanaugh, Ted Koehler, and Billy Moll.
