The World Ends With You review

Posted : 10 years, 9 months ago on 16 August 2013 09:53

I love this game, it takes a little bit to get used to the dual screen controls but as soon as you get the hang of it your hooked and turn into a zombie blubbering about 'beating it on ultimate'.

Its been about three months since I got this game.

The important thing is I'm still playing it. I'll be honest. I'm not as avid a gmaer as I used to be. Some games I'll lose interest in them about halfway through, and not play them again. The World Ends With You, I've put it down for a few weeks in the time I've had it, then I come back to it, and I'm tearing through it like I just bought it all over again. Its just that fun.

Its got a very unique fighting system that utilizes both screens at once quite nicely. The bottom screen is for most purposes of this game your main screen and the top screen is where your partner fights. In a battle you can either have them go full auto or control the top screen by way of the D-pad, and at the same time control your main character, Neku, with the stylus on the botom screen. You share a life bar and enemies, so if one monster gets erased on either screen, that's it for them.

The way the attacks are carried out are through the use of pins, that are classified from A-D. You can have a total of six pins for Neku. They all have their own stats, that can be altered through fighting or also through items you equip your characters with and what area of the gae you're in. So one item may make them stronger in one area but in another it may weaken them considerably. I'm aware this stuff isn't new. But the way they implement it offers players a chance to customize their fighting style whether it be melee or long range in a very fun way.

part of the replayability of the game is the amount o customization it offers players. That and the music. You don't get tired of it. It's something like a mix between techno and pop. Its very inline with the feel of the game.

Finally, a great action RPG for NDS!

Given Ninja Gaiden is a spectacular game, this game is, by far, the best game I've played in years! Collecting outfits, food items to boost stats, fusing with your partner for stronger attacks. This game gives you a feeling of total interaction with your characters, with the added bonus of being able to play through each day in the order of your choosing, as much as you want, once you beat the game. The characters are great too (okay, Shiki is a little annoying, but I forgave that by the end). Beat is by far the funniest, the token idiot whose street slang and invented vocabulary adds a lot of laughs to a somewhat morbid game. I think of this game as a cross between GantZ and Battle Royale without the mature ratings. The battle can be adjusted to be as hard or as easy as you want it to be, with of course extra rewards for taking the time to challenge yourself. The collecting of items and building of stats is usually on the annoying time-consuming end in most games, but with so much to do, I kind of catch myself jumping around my goals and meeting them quickly enough to keep from getting bored. Oh, and the fighting system is genius! You can basically sculpt Neku's attacks to your own style of play and even decide whether you want to control your partner or let them do their thing. This game was made with all types of gamers in mind, leaving no one out. The only thing that brings this game short of a perfect ten rating is... well, I would've liked to see their costumes altered by what you equip. I realize that that kind of thing would be time consuming and the DS most likely can't hold that much info, but if there is a sequel (and I hope there are many!), maybe on PS3, those kinds of details could be fully explored. Otherwise, I enjoyed the game immensely and recommend it to everyone!
