Dreamfall: The Longest Journey review

Posted : 9 years, 10 months ago on 5 July 2014 05:54

This rather sentimental continuation of The Longest Journey is among the better adventure games I know of. There is plenty of stuff to see and do, as you can interact with most things in the world.

It does take awhile to get used to the gameplay, however, as it isn't irrelevant whether you touch, look, smell, or talk to an object. Some of the puzzles you have to work out, require a specific sequence of actions, or the proper combination of items, which can be frustrating, when you've spent hours trying to figure out how to move on from where you are.

There is some amazing graphics, and its definitely worth spending a bit of time taking in the scene and ambience, and you can get some rather humorous results out of looking, touching, smelling, or talking to anything or anyone you meet.

The only thing I didn't really like about Dreamfall, was how the player is forced to alternate between characters. The main character is undoubtedly Zoรซ Castillo, but for large parts of the game, you have to play as April Ryan or what's-his-name, the holy warrior.

Playing as April Ryan isn't too bad, as her experiences are key to the plot; and the fact that she was the main character of the original The Longest Journey. But the warrior, whose name I can never remember, is boring, bland, and clumsily animated, and frankly I prefer to play through the parts of the game where you control him, with my eyes closed...

Anyone for a cliffhanger?

It has been called "one of the most anticipated adventure games in years" and I certainly believe this to be true. When I found out there was to be a sequel to The Longest Journey I was very excited about it since it was one of my favourite games. Now that I have played it I must say that it didn't quite meet all my expectations, but it was very well made and I enjoyed the storyline. I have to complain, however, that there were quite a few bugs for me, the controls were confusing, and it was way too short. I managed to complete the game in just under 2 and a half days, which I think is a little short considering the long wait. Now I have discovered there is to be a third game, but just how long will it be before this one appears? I don't want to put anyone off it, it is a great game, but long time fans may feel a little let down by the prospect of another long wait.
