In the film Playtime, Hulot faces the worst opponent of his life: a high-tech commercial complex. Early in the film, Hulot gets lost in the enormous building while desperately trying to get to a meeting he has arranged with an important man. This episode can be seen as a kind of metaphor for the alienation of modern man: in the midst of modern technology, finding another person is difficult, if not impossible. Many scenes in the film are both absurdly funny, but also startling in their truthfulness, and a great example of this is the scene where we see directly into people's apartments through huge windows, as if they were prisoners of a giant television. The object of Tati's jokes is not modern technology as a whole, but the impractical features and rigid hierarchies that are intrinsically associated with it. Hulot is rarely the sole focus of the humor, and he could be just like any other ordinary person struggling to keep up with the frantic pace of an increasingly hectic human life.
