"Detour" is a cult classic that is based on a simple premise: the life of a pianist turns into a nightmare when he becomes a hitchhiker. Edgar G. Ulmer directed his best films, of which "Detour" is naturally one, on a shoestring budget. In the film, he creatively uses the same theme of the innocent man that the "master of suspense" Hitchcock was also fond of. The ending of the film may not be surprising, but the story is still very coherent within its own framework. "Detour" is proof that even a simple and very straightforward film can tell a surprising amount about humanity and society in general. An average man rarely thinks about all the immoral things he is capable of, but a significant point in the film is also the observation that it is difficult for the average citizen to trust a legal system that is, to say the least, on questionable grounds. The answers to questions related to crimes are also not always unambiguous.
