The FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) is the National Trust of Italy. It is a non-profit foundation, established in 1975 with the intention of acting for the protection, safeguarding and enhancement of the Italian artistic and natural heritage through the restoration and opening to the public of historical, artistic or naturalistic assets (including castles, gardens, monastic buildings and other cultural assets) received by donation, inheritance or loan.

In addition to the national census "I Luoghi del Cuore" ("The Places of the Heart", biennial census of Italian places not to be forgotten), for several years the FAI has been organizing campaigns respecting its mission, for example "La Giornata FAI di Primavera" ("The FAI Spring Day"), happening since 1993, that offers the opportunity to visit numerous Italian assets of cultural and naturalistic interest normally closed to the public. Guided tours, exhibitions and events are also offered.
