Mr Gilbert is the head of sixth form, and has taken a strong dislike to the boys, Will in particular. He is somewhat sardonic, often taking delight at any misfortune that happens to Will – even going so far as to threaten him if he snitched on whoever tied him up and put a bin over his head. Gilbert is a totally merciless teacher, and punishes anyone who steps out of line, especially the boys. He is sadistic, dry and depressed and appears to possess little or no enthusiasm for his occupation, and tells Will that "the only reason people go into teaching is because they are unambitious, unlucky and the relaxed rules on police background checks".
