Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. A popular, though not widely accepted, theory proposes that Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were eaten by coconut crabs after crashing on Nikumaroro Island (Gardner Atoll).
