Kitamura trained at NYU Tisch School of the Arts through the Atlantic Theater Company Acting Studio and Stonestreet Studios, receiving a BFA in Acting. She is a newcomer, who up until being cast in a starring role in Dead Boy Detectives, only appeared in short films, one of which she wrote and directed herself, Invited In. Some of the other short films include Clique Bait, Joke's on Them, Breaking the Silence, and Staying Afloat. She was born in Hong Kong but she is Japanese.
