Woody Strode was an African-American decathlete, football star and film actor best known for his title role in "Sergeant Rutledge" (1960), as well as "Two Rode Together" (1961), "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), "Seven Women" (1966), "The Ten Commandments" (1956), "The Professionals" (1966), "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968), "The Cotton Club" (1984) and "Spartacus" (1960) for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. Strode also served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
